Roughly speaking the pattern cast against a wall for low beam should look something like this. Sometimes there is no second angled section (the right hand extra angled line is usually from the right hand headlight). You can imagine if the oncoming drivers eyes are the two asterisks that the low beams are driver friendly whilst high beams, driving lights and fog lights are not.

Code:
\        \
  \        \
    \        \          **
     \__________\_________
                        |
_________________________|

(Edit - Sorry the editor has stuffed up the diagram but hopefully you get the picture)

They need to be adjusted so the height of the top of the beam is the correct height above ground (on a flat surface) and then adjusted left and right.

(Apologies for the slight thread hijack below)

This eye position shown above demonstrates why you should not use your high beam/driving lights/fog lights in normal conditions. It is not "cool" it is inconsiderate (and illegal).

Also when you are forced to change back to low beam there can be a delay in your vision adjusting to the shorter throw distance and this can be dangerous for you and others if you are at the limit of safe speed on a windy road.

You obviously have headlights manufactured for the northern hemisphere. Turn them upside down and they should be right

Thanks everyone. They both look the same from the front. Not a mirror of each other.
I will check it out this weekend and see how I go.
It could be aimed too high potentially which means the pattern is too high up to register on the machine or it could be a dud headlight on the right hand side. I wil also replace the bulb in the off chance its no good.
At the registry the guys used a box thing to look for the pattern. Can i replicate this at home? I can adjust the height/aim on the garage door but I cant see the pattern part they are looking for even in the side they said was fine.

If the headlight is not defective then, yes, you should be able to measure using the garage door.

I was just fitting a pair of spots and thought of your issue as I was fiddling. Both headlights should have the wedge on the same side..... that being the drivers side... so, the inside (towards car centreline) for the pass side light and the outside (away from car c/l for the drivers side light....

Park the car a few feet from the garage door with the centreline as much as possible.. perpendicular to the door. Measure the height of the centre of the lights and the distance from the centreline... Plot these on the door. Turn on high beam and brightest par of the projected light should be petty much on these marks.

Obviously check the bulbs are correctly mounted the lights and go for a retest. (Perhaps print and take a copy of Rule 106/9). If you fail, ask for a detailed reason.... Referr them to your copy of the regs and seek specific guidance as to the reason for failure

Goodluck, Ian

Ah lefty I assume that's a joke.

Turning them upside down will not fix them and will cast light directly towards oncoming drivers.

Thanks for the advice (and tips on Koala spotting).

I think I have them passable however I think i need to spend some money on some decent lights. I changed the bulb out but made no difference. I swapped the left and right headlights over so now the RHS is fine now and the left is still an bit of an issue but overall not too bad. Well see how that goes. Techniacally they should only check the RHS as this was the side that failed so I may alright.

Passed the inspection! Got it registered and have put about 45kms on the clock before Murphy's law kicked in. I have oil on a fast drip coming from the flywheel cover hole. I am guessing it's a primary hear oil seal. I am getting over this mini.
