Just doing an oil change as final prep for Muscle Car Masters....

and found these pieces attached to the sump plug .. (not the 10c !)

Presume some circlip - but what ?
And what are the likely dangers ?

- gearbox 3 syncho (SCCR) ..

Was planning on pulling it all apart NEXT week anyway ....
.... but is it worth risking racing THIS weekend :? :?

:x :x

do you have pot joints / inner cv's ?

and the idler gear has a circlip on it too i think .. but i did think that they were the more common type with the holes for your pliers ..

do have circlips on your pistons ?

Diff is a Quaiffe (LSD type) with Hardy Spicer Outputs....
(one thing I was changing next week --> Trannex)

Have straight cut idlers - with own bearing...
http://www.minispares.com/product/Classic/Gearbox/S_Cut_gears/Drop_Gears/C-STR31.aspx?150501&ReturnUrl=/shop/classic/Gearbox/S~Cut~gears.aspx

Pistons - Hypatecs .. which I think are just a press fit...
but keep the ideas coming....

I'm pondering if it is 22g278 - layshaft bearing... ( item #9 )

(if so - how has it escaped ?)[

Looking at the pic, the only thought i have is a circlip as found on the diff/driveshafts.

So it might be just like Beanie suggests. I can't think of anything else in a gearbox or engine that it might be. All the gearbox and piston circlips are flat

You should be able to check by getting under the car and trying to pull the diff output flanges in and out of the diff. If they slide in and out, then you are missing the circlip.

They would only get into the gearbox if, when fitting the output flanges, the clip wasn't central and broke, then getting pushed into the gearbox as the flange slides in.

See what you are saying....

But this is the older style ATB
http://www.swiftune.com/Product/1104/early-14k-atb-differential.aspx

and uses the equivalent of these :

http://www.swiftune.com/Product/382/swiftune-10-spline-hardy-spicer-output-shafts.aspx

So much larger and robust circlip..... but will test anyways..

... :?: ....
Bit of a puzzle...

Err .... this is a bit left field ......
but think I have it....

When all pieces put together form a perfect circle.....
appears may be part of a previous head gasket .....

.. but that's just weird.....

...... but feel a bit more relaxed about it now..... :? :?

Don't think it's the current head gasket (BK450)...........

I think you will find they are copper in the head gasket not steel

Also they are not circular cross section, they are formed with a groove outside that grips the gasket.
Looks like a wire diff output shaft spring wire circlip to me... but how can it get into the sump? Unless the LSD has them inside, somewhere...

does one of the breaks look sheared? If so then it's probably a circlip (sheared with cutters) if not then it was formed as a solid ring . Perhaps one to prevent something slipping of a splined shaft (sun gear?)
