Don't forget there are pudding stirrers and there are pudding stirrers.

The later moke as per Moly's is different to the old 850 style.

850 is magic wand, the puddin' stirrers came in 1969 on Mokes and Pov pack cars- was superseded by rodchange box when it came in 1973 or 4.

Here's one fitted in a moke, I'm not sure what they did underneath though.
Don't think just bending the rod would work so maybe some sort of uni joint.

I can see the advantage in having a hole in the floor at that part of the floorpan.
You should be able to get a big jet of water to blast up the hole when you hit a patch of standing water at speed. :D

Is there any point to doing it or is it just another penis measuring exercise?

Yes the 'funnel' for the rod to go through could make things very wet inside
maybe there is some sort of rubber seal to stop water coming in.

I think the main reason is to give you a bit more room in the tunnel to get the exhaust
tucked up tight out of harms way if the vehicle is lowered or has a big exhaust or does lots of off road work.

On one outback moke trip the remote housing got smashed on a big rock near Birdsville so the moke driver selected 3rd gear and pushed started it until we got to somewhere where we could build a makeshift gear stick.

The sort of rubber thing you'r looking for is usually found on steering racks ;)

We have had an internal Gear Change on the Race Car for the last 3 years.

We use a Sidchrome 1/2" Uni Joint ["stolen" from the tool box] fitted using roll pins adjacent to the Gear Box & a tighter fitting original joining sleeve to stop everything wobbling about.
The Steady bar is also used to stop the box jumping out of gear & the Gear change mechanism is mounted using 2 Mini exhaust mtg rubbers to enable it to move with the motor.
We lengthened both rods approx 150mm to bring the gear change further back & mounted the housing 100mm higher.
For something different we are now modifying an aftermarket gear change designed for a VW Sand buggy with reverse lockout.
[Mini= front engine ...VW= rear engine. Part solution is to fit the VW gear change in "back to front" plus some internal mods.]
This mod will only use a single rod... no steady bar...so will move with the motor on rubber blocks.
