I have been looking at these kits for a while, are you going for the su or webber? They seem to be very good value, i am thinking the webber kit.

Already have an SU kit sitting in boxes waiting for an engine. :)

A bit more progress.
I fitted the pistons into the block, fitted the crankshaft, camshaft, oil pump and new twin row timing gear. Now need to track down a dial gauge so I can check the camshaft timing is correct.

Some photos from last few days work on the engine

Image

Minispares head studs fitted

Head and rocker gear fitted

I was dissappointed I had to file down the centre spacer on the Minisport rocker gear by a few thou so as to stop the binding of the 2 inner rockers and pack out the 2 outer rockers with a thin washer so as to reduce the play.

Did a trial fit of the Supercharger tonight.
Lines up on the head studs very nicely and seems to fit well. :) :)

Now for the rest of the engine and gearbox.

Mine is pretty much complete but everyone I have spoken too tells me not to run the pulley without a damper. I argue that they would come with it if required but folks with lots more experience than me say otherwise.

I have had a damper attached to the pulley, though now it fouls the engine mount so need some mods done there. Seriously thinking custom gilmer pulley may be the way forward.

This engine originally had a crappy tin pulley with no damper and I was going to buy a new harmonic balancer but obviously that wouldn't fit now.
So far no one else has advised against just fitting the pulley.

IMO crank life in a road 1275 or bigger will be seriously reduced without a good damper fitted. Vizard agrees. read da book....
You might get away with it in a hillclimb or drag car where engine life is measured in hours...

At this stage the car will only be used for weekends. My Cooper S which was restored 15 years ago has only 22000 miles since the resto, so I expect this car will be used in a similar fashion.
But I will check with GR when I see him next, although he has seen the kit and made no comment on the pulley at that time.

I must admit I can't see how you could fit a damper to the pulley as there would be no space between it and the radiator?

Ask BALLISTIC how long his roadie 1275 lasted when his $$ Romac damper shat itself on the way home from the Asparagus Job in '09. I know, I was 8 hours behind him on the road, and bought a good s/h standard one in Narellan and ferried it down to him ;)

No way I'd run anything bigger'n a 998 without a damper. Even a tuned 998, I'd probably fit one for the peace of mind...

I finished checking the cam timing and it is pretty close, works out to be about 111.5 degrees. GR advised should be OK, needs to be 112.
Inserted the new push rods and fitted the head and rocker gear then torqued the head down to 45lbs.
Next step is to check the gerabox and fit the central oil pickup and 4 pin diff.
Gearbox feels pretty good as it has only done about 3k since purchased as a reco unit from Mini Car Clinic.

you're better off going to 112.5 or 113 to allow for the chain to stretch

what compression will it have?

Some more progress, although much slower than anticipated. :(
Image

Pulled the gearbox apart and checked it, only found a worn layshaft which is now replaced with a new toughened version.
Reassembled with a new central oil pick up
Image

4 pin diff and 3.2:1 crown wheel and pinion.
Image

Cleaned up all the alloy parts ready for painting.
This shows a before and after shot
Image

clutch cover

Image

Gearbox placed onto the engine and bolted into place.

Now ready for painting before all of the ancillaries are added

Image

I also purchased a trigger wheel kit which I am adding onto the pulley and then configuring with a megajolt ignition kit.
