Is there a certain part of the fuel guage system that usually fails (like the guage, sender, etc)? Or is it just test it and see? How much for replacement guage, sender? This is in a 1970 van, by the way.

ive had 2 minis and both the fuel guages didnt work. Both had stuffed senders, Karcraft have new ones for around $60, for vans to i think.

hire an exorcist to scream "OUT, OUT FOUL PRINCE" over and over at the van til the fuel guage starts to work....easy!

Yeah `usually' it's just the sender worn out from old age.
But, I bought a NEW 130MPH S speedo a while back from Minispares- its fuel gauge carked it in 3 months. Totally open circuit. Not worth shipping it back to UK.

If you ground the sender wire at the tank it should read full.

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but it's one i was going to post soon myself!
My fuel gauge didn't move off empty so i replaced the sender, now it reads 3/4 full when empty, and full when 1/4 tank or more?

Any Ideas? Please?

(oh and i have tested it with the sender unit out of the tank, so I know that it does this when the sender is reading at the right level!)

Maybe it is the wrong sender. You can connect a multimeter to the wires to read the ohms (restistance) and move the sender up and down and write down the resistance when full, half full and empty and make sure that they are correct for the guage. If the resistance is wrong or doesn't change when you move the sender than it is faulty or incorrect, you will need to find out the resistance values for your gauge to match up senders.

Have I totally confused you!

Any idea where i can find out what the resistance should be at different readings for any particular gauges do you?

Mine is a Morris 68 deluxe.

I am not quite sure, prob. need to do some reserch on the WWW. At work I usually hook the sender into the gauge and see if it works that way, sometimes the gauges come with the resistance marked on them (I work on earthmoving equipment so they are a bit larger than the mini though!!!). Maybe someone else knows.

Early 850 fuel gauges and senders worked the opposite way. The senders for those are held in with 6 screws, not a bayonet ring.
