I reckon that's normal -- at idle, there's not a lot of oil flow so the ball closes the valve completely and the pressure is higher. At revs, greater flow pushes the ball off the seat and the pressure drops. The old valve would have bound against the bore wall and masked all of this.

It's the flutter I don't like... where it ends up (50psi hot) is fine. I'll whack a couple of flat washers in behind the nut and see if that helps.

Do it by eye, it's easy and pretty accurate ;) With the steering centred, stand a couple of metres in front of the car and put an eyeball on the vector which touches the leading and trailing edges of the tyre sidewall. If your toe-out is spot on, this line should touch the leading sidewall of the rear tyre. Do both sides and you're pretty close to perfect. This assumes of course your rears are where they should be ;)

I used this procedure on my car in October '07, have done about 7000km since with no undue tyre wear. We did Mick's too after pumping up the hydro, and it turned out to be about a quarter-turn of the tie rod end out.

I use that method and get better tyre wear than if it's done on a machine.

I'm going to re size my door trims so they fit easier tonight, and line the doorbins.

I polished the dip stick, and checked the tyre pressures for the drive on Saturday, may even polish the rear subframe for something extra to do.

I turned the parkers on whilst driving, this let some of the Lucas smoke out from under the dash  so I turned them back off...
Diagnosis and treatment tomoz, but I've pulled the thermally challenged red wire off the switch for now. To be sure, to be sure....

Fiddled some more with the oil pressure relief valve and have it where I'm pretty happy with it. First tried a thick (4mm or so) washer behind the nut to eliminate the flutter as revs rise, but pressure gave 100psi a scare (cold) on the first drive around the block. I figure too much of a good thing isn't a good thing.

So, out with that one and in with one about 1.8mm. Pressure is now:

Cold - about 80psi anywhere in the rev range
Hot - 45psi btw idle-1500rpm, 75psi btw 1500-2500rpm, then 60psi above that.

Still have a little pressure flutter just off idle, but I can live with it now.

Gave it a fang on the freeway and back roads for an hour or so, cruising at around 4400rpm to get it nice and hot. Boy, is the pressure stable now 8)
