hi there, I have come to the engine build stage in my resto and I need to choose a head.
In terms of value for money what should I do ? Buy vizards book and a die grinder and do up my 12g202 (port job, shave, valve grind) or buy a variant of an 1275 head? or any other variant anyone may suggest. I have 2 12g202s and an 1000cc head(smaller valves) somewhere too.
I have no plans to convert it to unleaded fuel as I have no issues with using an additive.
I also do not intend to force induct this engine.

as always your thoughts and opinions will be greatly appreciated.

cheers

Personally, I would just port the 202 head out, it's a bit of work but worth it. And you will learn a lot doing it.....
Fit 998 Cooper inlet valves (31mm, 1.219") and open the valve throats to suit.
If the exhaust seats are a bit sunk from high mileage, get some oversize ones (1.062", 27mm) from Karcraft. Or if they're REALLY bad, fit unleaded seats- (costs about $140), and get new 1.000" exhaust valves.

After porting and chamber work, deck the head to get around 9.0-9.5:1 C/R. More if fitting a big cam.

Yes the 295 is nice, but getting rarer now. Nothing in a 295 that can't be got from a modified 202 with some grinding.
Graham Russell prefers the 202 for making race heads, in some places they allow port shape to be improved over a 295.

I'd grab one of Vizard's 2 books if not got already. It has pictures, and dimensions... 8)

Well it's pretty hard to make an old 850 head worse, but with a 202 I'd seek some idea of required mods first. If you get carried away and hit fresh water, it's a doorstop.

As David Vizard once said, speed equipment is only any good if it actually does add SPEED. 8)

A few pics of the last 202 head I did. It went on a 1220 Sprite motor with Imp flat top pistons. 8)
Pics taken before final polishing.
