Well I dropped the Minstar off at the shop to see if they could sort out the problem with the fuel starvation. Here's the lowdown:

1. Rust particals (I think from the right hand tank) shredded my brand new bosch pump. Also almost completely blocked and ruined the EFI fuel filter. (bad)
2. Guys supplied me with a Perburg EFI pump (rated to 500hp) for $200 less than retail (good).
3. Have sorted out high idle so now sits at 800rpm (very good).
4. Found out what those little black boxes attach to the loom near ECU were, one is indeed an FCD and guess what the other is a speed limiter defencer! (very good), so my dream to hit 360km/h is still possible!
5. According to his dyno I have lost 10kw at 7psi so now I am only doing 60kw which I am not so happy with. But I am now putting out 511Nm of torque (seriously that's what it says on the dyno sheet!). Obviously I am highly sceptical of the reading or maybe I ain't reading it right because it now means my Minstar has a similar torque output to the 5.5 Ltr AMG Mercedes SLK.
6. All was sorted supposedly but the car died going up Red Hill and 4 more times on the way home, most likely because the filter on the fuel pump has become clogged pretty much straightaway (bad). So I am going out first thing tomorrow to sort out.

Yeah a long post and I don't expect anyone to read it mainly having a whinge...

Cheers

Matt

511Nm of torque should easily get you up Red Hill :!:

Sounds like you need to flush both tanks and the lines :!: :?: :!: :!:

Where are you buying this crappy fuel :!: even in Cranberry, fuel filters should last 6-12 months without trouble :!:

Oh, and be careful taking those tanks out to clean them

But I'm sure there is no reminder needed....

Holy crap Power, what did you do, run over a Chinaman or something?

Thats the sickest run of bad luck I have ever seen.

Anyway, the only way I have heard of getting old fuel tanks spotless is to get them steam cleaned on the inside. The high pressure steam is sure to remove all the contaminants.

Then, go out and buy yourself a good filter. I am using a Delphi removable cartridge type with integrated water trap used on diesel trucks. The unit cost me $90 originally but after that the cartidges are only $5.

Then go and buy a lottery ticket.

Cheers,
Andy

well that's just horrible luck... I'm going with the feeling that it's still definatley a mini,. hopefully just teething problems and will be up and running great soon.

you better not take those tank's out un-supervised

but on the other hand you know what to tow the caravan (and trailer, possibly a small town) around in. Jees that's a stonking ammount of torque.

I had a 67 dodge pheonix a few years ago it had nearly 7 litres of V8 torque and probably didn't make much more than that. and that was in a car that a mini would fit into 4 times in size and about 7 times in weight. and I thought.

well let's hope for your sake your bad luck run's out really soon on this car. put in a pump pre filter and maybe listen to andy about the disel filter

Well update. Went back to Intune this morning. Guy asked me to fill the tank as possibly gravity feed to pump wasn't enough due to low fuel level. Fill it up ran ok. Leave go around a few roundabouts cuts out (sure enough leave the premises and the problem returns, typical). So probably need a pre efi pump pump.

Also forgot to indicate another bad issue. My water pump is leaking. Does anyone know if you can rebuild the starlet pump or am I up for a whole new one (more $$$).

Also I have lined up a new radiator which should cure my overheating issues as should replacing a leaking water pump!!!!

Cheers

Matt

i think you may have found your problem there, a low pressure pump feeding a swirl tank that then feeds the high pressure pump is the go with fuel filter between low pres pump and the swirl tank, dont ya just love cars

Matt..my advice is to fix the water pump issue before you try the new rad...this could have been your overheating problem all along...if it can't maintain pressure and maybe the impeller is stuffed then it ain't gunna be too efficient.

With the fuel issue....could it just be that the lines aren't up to the flow that the Starlet was used to??? Maybe upsize to the original diameter??

Good luck with continuing development :)

Mick yeah I only had the water pump leak confirmed yesterday. But I am still going with the radiator as before the pump was rooted it was still overheating when the temperature reached more than 20 something degrees. I have had this confirmed by Phillip Rad Services who ran it stationary from stone cold and with the thermo fan running she still boiled over in less than 25 minutes. I really just want to solve the overheating issue once and for all and having the spare capacity should I uprate the power would obviously be fortuitious.

Basically there is simply not enough volume running through the engine with the little radiator and the radiator isn't efficient enough. I want to solve this once and for all and also have plenty of capacity built in for when I go a bigger turbo etc.

As for the fuel lines I replaced them with 5/16" both send and return and this is larger slightly than the Starlet items and Ben at intune did a flow test that confirmed the flow is more than enough and has spare capacity should I need greater flow.

Good news I drove her home from Tuggers tonight and gave her a flogging and no hint of fuel starvation so maybe she's come good (went like a rocket) will have another run tonight and we will see but apart from the fuel issue she just purs...

Cheers

Matt have a look on ausrotary.com in the for sale section for any go fast bits. Rotaries need LOTS of fuel and there is always good fuel set ups for sale on there cheap.

Matt,

You probably need a surge tank to stop surging when you fang it around the roundabouts.

Also put in a pre filter before all of your pumps. I have a pre filter before the low flow and another before the high pressure.

I also considered installing a cheapy at the tanks for when i finally start it to make sure i don't have any crap make its way out of the tanks that have been sitting around for a while.
