ok, when i was doing V8's, it was normal to fit a hi Volume oil pump...
For no other reason than "Its what you do" - I stopped doing it because i found that at high revs (7000+) it would actually DRAIN the sump and leave most of it in the top half of the engine.... Not cool - the Stockie did NOT do this and as such, then engines with Stock pumps lasted longer ....

Ok, wots the deal with the A series ? - Hi Vol the Go or not ?

J

I have been told that the MiniSpares Sureflow ones (pin drive ) are er... NOT Sure****.
Lately the pins have been breaking at the slot, ususlly if a racer revs a cold motor with 100psi.
But, I still use them as I have S cam. No probs yet, but I never nail it when cold.

Also I believe the star drive `stars' are now NLA.

So,,
If you have a choice, I'd get the later slot drive ones.

Turbo pump is too big for most purposes, according to KC and others. You are just dumping even more oil down the bypass to sump.

The A series rocker gear is not a continuous oil feed, it gets 1 pulse/cam rev from the groove on front journal.
But if volume is too high, you can put a restrictor jet in the oil feed hole at top of block.

All Oz 998s were pin drive except automatics which were spider drive.
Cooper S was pin drive.
1275 non-S (A series) were spider drive.

Pin drive has a pin thru the cam and a slot in the pump shaft.

Spider drive uses a splined pump shaft, with a triangular `spider' that sits on it and engages its 3 corners in the camshaft.

Slot drive is the opposite of pin drive- the cam has a slot in the back face which engages a tongue on the pump shaft.

A+ motors are all slot drive (except maybe A+ automatics, never seen one  ).

Use whatever pump suits the cam you have, any pump will do the job- but these days the slot drive are preferred.

There has never been a 'high pressure' A-series oil pump - apart from when they changed the eraly pre-1961 pumps to teh current items. The Turbo has a higher volume - but it is grossly inefficient. You simply do not need a higher flowing/higher pressure pump on an A-series. As Kevin said - the standard set-up dumps a chunk of what it pumpsstraight back in to the sump - to teh tune of around 30%. Higher flow means more power consumed to pump it. I did an excercise some 8 years ago where I strted slimming pumps down a 1/16" at a time to see where 'thick enough' was. I got down to half the impellor thickness of a standard pump and still enough oil flow to give the motor what it needed. The main difference was the lack of oil being dumped straight back in to the sump.

Go for A+/sl;ot drive - a whole lot more reliable and easy to buy. Pin drive is an ancient thing that should be left well alone. KC.

Keith,
Only problem over here is, we have bugger-all A+ cams in Oz, all we got sold were pin drive, (& spider drive on automatics and non-S 1275).
~90% of what's on the road here would have a pin drive pump.

I have a 1100S spider drive cam and plan to use the pump. In the Vizard book (yeah yeah I know) there are 2 types of factory pumps for these drives, one with a silver back plate and the other with a black backplate. The one I have i with a black backplate! does this mean it's high flow, in which case it's too much oil as mentioned above??

Hmmm - also dont pack the starters(vaseline)in the pump then try to turn it - a 20 cent sized gob decided to lodge itself in my right eye. Yes there are hi po pumps - just proved it there...lol. Hurt like a mo-fo and threw the pump up the back yard(the neighbours hate me but have a cool tool collection!!)

Go the pin - live on the edge!

Hooroo

Only high-flow pump was fitted to the Metro Turbo - it has a much deeper rotor and anulus. Steel backed (black plate) pump is Hoburn Eaton one, ally-backed is concentric. Hoburn Eaton has 4 into 5 rotor/anulus, Concentric 5 into 6. There;s not a whole lot of differnce between the two, although the more lobes the rotor has the less 'pulsing' occurs. But either way - they both work OK.

I've been speaking to Graham Russell about getting more A+ cams out to Oz for you guys... trouble is they weight quite a bit for what they are! KC.

Yeppp - pretty much!!

I am happy with my progress as I still have all digits intact(albeit a little aerated at times...)but my latest is getting POR 15 all over my hands and running out of solvent. Went to work today again with black hands!!

Next is to shoe horn the new motor into the beast and hoping to god the oil pump does its job!!
