Thinking of getting an oil guage for when I hot up the Mini, but not sure what's more important to keep an eye on. Oil pressure or oil temperature? Space is kind of limited so not really sure if I can fit both, or if I will really need both.

He will already have a water temp. guage in the rover, Oil Pressure would be far more important than temperature. Oil's these days can take alot.

If you're talking overall importance, then I think Water temp.

If you've already got a functioning temperature gauge, then Oil pressure next.

If you've got no oil pressure, you'll do more damage before it even gets up to temp.

BOOST.

But other than That, in this order....(For a S/C or Turbo, anyway - N/a some of these dont apply)

Water Temp
Oil Pressure
Fuel Pressure
Oil Temperature
Inlet Temperature
Exhaust Temperature

Man, If i had the room, I'd fit the whole Autometer catalogue.....

So oil pressure guage it is then, do people recommend vaccum or electrical type?

Oil pressure definatley... I'd go the mech type.. Make sure your oil warning light is working too, don't rely on a guage, as you'll see a light much quicker then a guage.

The single biggest mistake i made with an Oil pressure guage was using the thin-ass plastic tubing that came with it... the guage reacted slowly and sluggishly...

Added a Minispares (minisport?) Braided line, and WOW ! - you can even see the relief valve opening and closing !!

worth the 10 pound... easily !

Could we just get one made up at Pirtek or something locally?

Pirtek could make you a decent 1/8" hydraulic hose but you need to take them the brass flange nut and pipe end that goes on the gauge.
The bottom end connection into block is 1/8" BSP.

Problem with those braided lines is whatever they rub on, they cut through...eh, kazjim...

Hey, it was only a little fire.....

I missed one rub point, it just happened to be a power feed to the ignition switch.... - arcced out, split the hose, oil spashed everywherem smoke, fire.. screaming, yelling etc etc ....

got it home ok though....

Electric gauges only give you 90 degrees of needle movement, which is a bit of a waste in a circular gauge face. Machanical gauges give more needle movement (like 220 degrees) so I went mech.
Of course in the moke I don't have to worry about the tube coming away from the gauge and filling all the carpet & dash with oil like my mate had on his skyline....
