i've drained the fuel out via the fuel pup in the engine bay...i've unbolted the tank strap thing that goes around the tank...and there is some sort of...bolt (without threading) in the bottom of the tank that is protruding through the floor of the boot (through a hole that looks factory) it is quite long and has an 11mm hex nut about 3/4 of the way up it...there is a rubber seal where this "bolt" meets the tank...it appears this is the only thing holding my tank in now as it is loose but i am unable to remove it coz of this...what is it? and how do i deal with it?

It is the drain plug. You will have to remove it to get the tank out.

You need a long tube spanner and you slip it over the drain pipe from underneath. Not sure of the size. It will probably be rusted and in need of a good dose of WD40.

yeah gave it a good dose of wd40 this arvo and then decided to let it marinate for the night :P tube spanner sounds like a fantastic thing, didnt know one even existed...although i did think "wow, a long hollow socket head thing would be AWESOME right about now" a number of times :P...i believe the nut is 11mm so...i'll go pick one up tomorrow...thanks for the advice :)

update:

i have my 7/16" (11.1mm :P) tube spanner...and i still cant get the F**KING thing out!!! for starters the tube on the end of that valve is frickin long...its gotta be atleast 10cm...from nut to end...so the tube spanner isnt quite long enough...so i couldnt use the wee stick of metal that goes through it to yank it out...I am thinking of getting a 30cm section of RHS steel with an 11mm internal size and drilling a hole through that...that should get it off...

Well I had the exact same problem a little while back and I ended up moving the tank so I could just fit a hack saw blade to cut the pipe off from the boot side. Then it came out fine  I dont really see the point in it, if I want to empty the tank its not that hard to pull out now. If you really want the drain pipe you can just add a new fitting and pipe when you put it back in.

yeah...my jerry-rigged tube spanner didnt work :( wasted $16 on RHS :P oh well...still have 2m of it left to find other things to do with it...

i ended up taking a pair of tin snips to it...and the tube came RIGHT off...then a socket wrench took care of the rest ;) took a fair bit of time to get the 5L or so that was still in the tank out...but its all out now and i am happy...for now ;) next...rear subframe

Later cars didn't have it.
To drain the tank, you could pull the hose off the pump or feed pipe underneath. Helps if it ain't full though...
Probably more civilised to siphon it out. 8)

The smell of solvents and petrol fumes in the garage help dull the pain when you smash your fingers.
