Well folks this `GR modded' 295 head is getting bunged onto the Chongomobile 1098 this morning... :P

The stocko? cam is staying in. Too much trouble to do a cam change in the car and time in with a duplex chain set, properly.

comon kevin its not that difficult its just tricky.
I have done a few but must admit its easier to do when the motor is on the bench.
I hope the head makes a big difference but just imagine the difference when you put a cam in also.
I have found the JW2 cam to work brilliantly in the small bore motors and nice in the big motors, you should try it out.
Kev i can bring one with me if you want to try the JW2 cam i want to bring one over to show Graham its a cam i stumbled on when trying to match the SW5 but got this instead and works better in every motor i have used it in.

The tickiest part of the cam installation that is turning both me and kev off is the bit about putting in a double row timing chain... the timing plate needs to be countersunk to accept flush allen key bolts. I just don't fancy running a single row chain with an RE13. All this while the engine is in the car  :? It could lead to 6 hours of fartarsing around which both he and I don't have to spare...

So for now it's the head only which is a simple enough task. The head is off already and the new one is just about ready to bolt on, took me about 2 hours last night to do it. I'm just missing a few gaskets  Hardest part so far has been the extractors...

Well here are some piccies. I couldn't make it to Gafmo's birthday yesterday as I promised to do some babysitting for my sister in law. I got home about 5pm yesterday and got stuck into it. Here are the results:

Slightly used valves
Image

White valve closeup:
Image

GR's 12G295 modded head versus a stocko 12G202 (sorry about the optical illusion, i shot it at an angle and GR's one looks smaller than the 12G202  ) No prizes for guessing which is which:
Image

So the story goes, my 12G202 head which is obviously stock as a rock, has double valve springs! Vizard says there were what he calls "Twin carb 1100's" which came with twin springs, 80lb on the outside, 30lbs on the inside.

This then leaves me to believe that it possibly may not be my fault that cylinders 3 and 4 have white exhaust valves and it could be from the engine's previous life running with badly configured twin SU's or something. Either that or it was me with my dellorto antics

If this engine is not at all stock, then it could be that it's running a different cam and hence the old owner threw in double springs to cope? is that why Lillee is so lumpy at idle? I've always wondered if it was because the engine was old or if there is a cam in it... Most likely the former

This makes me more determined to get it dyno'd properly with Greig Malure this time so that I won't have this problem.

Jai,
Not only does the front plate need csk'ing so the screws clear the chain, but some of these Oz duplex gears have the keyway miles out. Mini Mad's needed a 10* offset key to get it right....

We'll save the RE-13 cam for Chong's 1360 & Mk2 S box combo, when it gets built...
<edit>
Chong, the white stuff on the valves is metal salts from the leaded super/LRP/Flashlube/Valvemaster that it's been running over the years.
Looks like the head hasn't been off in a while!

ps I'll be there about 10.00am..
Bringing dial gauge too, to check valve lift...

The 202 still has plenty of meat left on it and will be good to mod up

OK boys: BANG! :( we broke a head bolt!

BUGGA! it was all running, warmed up, sounded Sooo mean and growling. Heated her up on idle and retorqued the head, second bolt went BANG :( I was SOO ready to take it for a spin! :?

Anyway no big deal, just means we have to do it all over again. I'll be an expert after this

What we found out about Lillee's current engine: Head been off before. The inlet valves are newer than the exhausts, the bore is nice and clean and in relatively good order. And the best parts!!! It's an 1152cc AND the cam has been reground already :D Bonus! I'll let kev tell you the numbers, I can't remember them like he can, but for sure it will run really good with this head. The rockers were in order, everything was great, cept now I have to find another ACL head gasket and head nuts.

Never mind, don't feel too bad Kev, it just means more practice for me. And anyway I prefer the studs look over the bolts

Kev had a magic tool to measure the cam lift by turning the engine over in neutral. I think it's called a dial gauge??

It's not ground recently, it's just not a stock lift meaning it has been ground

I knew it! I knew she wasn't stock! I was like, "gee Lillee goes pretty good for stock 1098 with stock cam!"

Well well she is a 1152 with slightly better than an "S" cam 8) And very soon she will breathe 10 times better with the GR head.

I need better brakes
