1969 Mini Cooper S Mk2 which is unmodified.

I think my ignition coil has packed up.

Symptoms are the coil is getting super hot and engine is cutting out.

What are the tests I can do to check the coil?

What is the type of replacement coil I can get?

Check the primary windings by sticking an ohmeter on the + & - terminals. Resistance should be about 3 ohms.

The secondary windings are checked by the + terminal and the HT lead outlet. Reading would be around 10k and 15k ohms

Overheating can be from a short or loss of cooling oil.

There should be a few how to videos on YouTube if you get stuck

The secondary windings are checked by the + terminal and the HT lead outlet. Reading is 5.50 ohms

No oil loss.

If those measurements are accurate then it is bad for sure.

Almost anywhere you can get one. Only thing you need to know is the voltage it’s designed for and does it use a ballast resistor.

Its a Lucas 12H. 3 ohm no resistor.
I had a good run with Bosch GT40 instead on my S.

As long as it’s 3ohm with a standard 1969 electrical system it’ll work fine. If you have points it’s worth checking the dwell time (points gap) is correct as this can contribute to the coil overheating

Tony at Auto Electrics on Wheels (ausmini “convertible mini”) is always super helpful and quick with post & knows exactly what you’ll need
