What innovative ways have you guys come up with to keep cool while driving older Minis in the summer in the absence of aircon.
What works, what doesn't work, what do you do?

I used this and found it works really well. It is heavy though. And not super cheap.

I have it on the firewall below the dash line, and firewall above the dash line including a disc of it covering the Speedo hole. So firewall completely covered.

Cuts down immensely on noise and heat for me.

I assume that is the metric equivalent of the 2 50 aircon I had in an old truck I drove.
It was also equipped with Armstrong power steering.

I’ve got a 12V fan that plugs into a cigarette lighter socket. It’s good when you’re in traffic or going slow and not getting any airflow through the windows.

The handheld misting fans are really good at cooling you too

Drive at night when it's cooler

Half seriously, instead of doing day trips, in summer with daylight savings we'll go for a late afternoon/evening cruise somewhere nice and do a picnic dinner like fish and chips by the beach, pizza by the river etc. Great for a mid week run after work too.

When we traveled "across the top" in 2011 we experienced outside temps of 40+C. Lynne & I found it most comfortable to have the side windows fully up and the rear Flappers always fully open. The quarter vents could be adjusted to have a good steady air flow through the car and this was preferable for us to the windows down as the air flow was much less then. However Rick and Elaine preferred to have the main windows at varying heights and utilised a water spray bottle to combat dehydration. Most important to keep the fluid levels up and stop regularly for leg stretches etc.

Maybe I am just getting old but it seems more uncomfortable than it used to.

I would imagine there are good and bad fans, which type are you using. Size brand etc.
I have wondered if the small ice water coolers are any good or just a waste of time space and money

No idea of brand, just a cheap one from the auto parts shop or eBay will work. Mine clips on the lower dash rail

I've thought about buying a bag of ice at the servo on hot days and just leaving it in the car (in a tub if needed to stop melting leaks). Presuming you are near a servo.

Minis aren't too bad. Try sitting in a modern car on any day, turn off the AC and see how long you last. I can only go minutes!
