Well to finish off my rebuild I bought a Gunson Carbalancer
Went to use it and it didn't fit my Inlets due to the air cleaner thread
I over came this problem by using the plastic cover off a roll of thread tape as a spacer and it worked like a treat
Carbs balanced up beautifully both on idle and with the throttle linkages engaged
Went for a drive and it runs like a dream
Even idles nicely

Rebuilt carbs are a dream. The best part is you don't need to touch them from one end of the year to the next, they don't lose tune. Just as the factory intended!

This answers my question if I can rebuild my carbs with ordinary tools and a rebuild kit. What size drill bit did you use on the body to fit the butterfly shaft bushings?

I have never seen the jets with a rubber hose like that. It is different from the ones included in the rebuild kit i bought. The shaft has quite a bit of play. When i was removing the carbs the bottom mounting screws were hand tight. No wonder it never ran or idled right....

The Clubman Parts Book PUB1052 lists M as the standard needle

Anybody know how i can remove the needles? I removed the retaining screw on the side but the needle would not come out.

Slowly putting the carb's together is it a big difference if I cut the screw that hold the butterfly other than just leaving it like the original?

it's OK to cut the screws, but I use a very small amount of threadlocker for a little bit of insurance.

The SU performance manuals (and Vizard etc.) show thinning down the shaft and/or removing the upper half...

Is it okay to use the red threadlocker (loctite)?

yeah, that's what I use - but don't put it on until you're really finished putting the carbs together because you might not be able to get the screws out again

If you don't want to keep the old needles just take out the screw and pull the needles out with a pair of pliers. It's a bit harder if you want to keep them... I take the screw out and drill a small dimple in the needle shank through the screw hole, then lever it out with a stiff scribing tool, someone else probably has a better way but that's what I do..
