When you say "back" I presume you mean the one on the end of the block hidden by the engine steady above the primary gear housing ?

yep, that'd be the one Dr Mini is talking about... technically the front of the block is where the water pump goes, the left side of the block faces the grille and the right side is against the firewall

So the engine is described as if it was a north/south configuration as difined from the cars perspective

And you are looking from the LH side... When in car. Not how you described it above.
Left side of a north south motor is the exhaust side in car.
You are standing at the wrong end by convention.
