And that's was only because the wife wouldn't let me buy a Turbo. Then $135K now $280+

or a GT2, then $250k, now $2M+ .. if you can find one.

The car has made more money than any property or shares I have. It's art, and art that is getting rarer.

I'm now an owner of a 67 Cooper S which I am currently spending big $ on getting back to original.

Just like Porsches, the Mini conjure up an automotive emotion and have an admirable race pedigree. Just on silhouette, most people will be able to tell a Porsche, VW Combi, VW Beetle and a Mini. They are definitely a piece of automotive history. All are heading north in pricing.

Rather than doubting the prices, I think we should be all congratulating those willing to hold out for those prices.

Rather than self deprecating your passion, I think you need to acknowledge it.

I can certainly see the value in a Fully restored, GENUINE, matching numbers Mini Cooper S, north of $45K.
........and stop chopping them up into Franken-Minis!!!

Im quite amazed such a comparatively modern porsche has appreciated so much in such a short time...

Why you ask, well it's called the rise of the Chinese middle/ upper class. They now have disposable income now 10 years ago they had nothing. They are buying classics and exotics from overseas, because they have nothing local and pushing prices up as a consequence. Another example is Zetland and Alexandria in Sydney total saturation of Chinese investors buying off the plan units, over paying for the properties. That Classic Throttle shop everyone has a giggle about the prices of some of his stock would be sending a few cars on boats to China

I also put the 2002 R53 JCW into Future classic as the relaunch of the mini for the modern era...

It used to be that you could sell a Mini to the Japanese for a handsome profit. Northern Mini Parts did just this IIRC on at least one occasion. I don't know if this is still happening, most transactions these days seem to be the other way round with people importing Japanese sourced 1990s Rover Coopers into OZ.

I'm not aware of anyone who has sold a Mini to the Chinese - yet.
