Out of interest, this was discussed recently in this thread - viewtopic.php?f=2&t=92454

An important part of that discussion (in my opinion) was the statement by Peter Davis in his book, repeated here.

SMBD Body Stampings

Bodies were stamped with a code by the Sheet Metal and Body Division at the end of the metal finishing line for internal tracking and a running cumulative total. The number was used within the body shop and not intended to be visible on the completed vehicle. It was positioned in diverse places, sch as (depending on the vehicle) the battery tray platform, bulkhead drain channel, behind the voltage regulator, or behind the final ID plate or compliance plate position.

Doug. Maybe an addition to the info already in the registers would stop the question being asked in the future. The 500 difference can be taken literally.

Yes, it's worth considering, although two things worry me a bit about adding more information to the introductory section of the registers:

  • There have been several examples of people asking questions about the register data when the answer is already contained in the introduction. It's as if some people don't bother reading the first page.
  • If we are not careful the introduction could morph into a guide to everything you ever wanted to know about that model. The lists intentionally exclude lots of change point data, such as when scuttle and floor panels changed, and other information that would help identify whether a car is genuine or not, as that's not the intended purpose of the registers.

Nine years ago I paid $103,000 for a porsche (1996 Carrera 4S) , they are now asking $180k-230K

And that's was only because the wife wouldn't let me buy a Turbo. Then $135K now $280+

or a GT2, then $250k, now $2M+ .. if you can find one.

The car has made more money than any property or shares I have. It's art, and art that is getting rarer.

I'm now an owner of a 67 Cooper S which I am currently spending big $ on getting back to original.

Just like Porsches, the Mini conjure up an automotive emotion and have an admirable race pedigree. Just on silhouette, most people will be able to tell a Porsche, VW Combi, VW Beetle and a Mini. They are definitely a piece of automotive history. All are heading north in pricing.

Rather than doubting the prices, I think we should be all congratulating those willing to hold out for those prices.

Rather than self deprecating your passion, I think you need to acknowledge it.

I can certainly see the value in a Fully restored, GENUINE, matching numbers Mini Cooper S, north of $45K.
........and stop chopping them up into Franken-Minis!!!

Totally agree eecee, I never understand why people put down others for trying to push up the value of there cars, the way l see it, a classic car is a investment, I want to enjoy it and getting a return from my investment is a bonus of the hobby. My next car won't be a mini 2 is enough for me but my decision will consider monetary return as a long term investment as part of my decision making process.

History favours the brave and in an ocean of food you only need one hungry fish to take your baited hook. I wish the seller well.

It reminds me of premium dealers like Classic Throttle Shop, a $60K Mini looks like a bargain, and is mere pocket change if you come in looking for a $625K Ferrari or $1.75M Aston!
