Hey guys, went for my road worthy today at the ACT motor registery in the hope to getting the mini on the road after a 10 year restoration. Unfortunately I failed this time but the things to fix are only minor and can be done on a weekend afternoon. One thing that has go me stumped is one of their points was the bean pattern on the right hand side is not correct. I upgraded the oringal lights to the Mini 7" Halogen headlight upgrade kit from Minisport. Can anyone shed some light onto what the issue could be? They noted it was only the right hand side that was the issue. The other thing they said was the headlight light needs to have a kick at the end but my right hand side just appears as a big blur. Any thoughts?

Maybe you have a left hand side headlight on the right?

Both headlamps throw the same pattern. There is RHD (LH dip) and LHD (RH dip). Maybe you have one of each, otherwise the RH one is a dud.

I find the Wipac Quadoptics are good, so were Hellas, but with cheap kits you take your chances.

Yes both sides have the same pattern and are a mirror image of each other. I notice that they both face the same way eg the wedge on the side, which I understand creates the pattern, is on the outside on the Right hand side and on the inside on the left hand side. Are they suppose to be the opposite of each other? Can it be the bulb?

I think both headlights should have a wedge of light up to the left to illuminate the side of the road.
If they are the other way you blind oncoming traffic.
When dipping the lights from high to low beam, they should dip down and to the left (viewed from inside the car)

These two things are contradictory so might need clarifying.

If they are mirror image the pattern would be on the outside of both or the inside of both. And that is not want you want.

If they are identical then both will look exactly the same from the front. And have the same pattern in the same orientation (eg such as the second part of the quote above). That's what you want. And as people said above the low beam should dip to the left.

Thanks everyone. They both look the same from the front. Not a mirror of each other.
I will check it out this weekend and see how I go.
It could be aimed too high potentially which means the pattern is too high up to register on the machine or it could be a dud headlight on the right hand side. I wil also replace the bulb in the off chance its no good.
At the registry the guys used a box thing to look for the pattern. Can i replicate this at home? I can adjust the height/aim on the garage door but I cant see the pattern part they are looking for even in the side they said was fine.

Which halogen kit did you get from Minisport? I bought the Wipac Quadoptic ones from them. (Not yet registered)

It sounds like you bought the $55 set not the $110 set. Whatever, I would send the RH lamp back, it is not correct.

Yes it was the $55 set. (Mini 7" Halogen headlight upgrade kit - suit clubman (PAIR)) Apparantly there has never been an issue with the qaulity/pattern before. I will keep trying to work it out.
Still would like some advice on how I may check for this elusive line that kicks up at the end.

Googling "ACT Car Roadworthy Headlights Test" provided a link to the following PDF

http://www.rego.act.gov.au/__data/asset ... ssible.pdf

Lighting for cars is apparently Rule 106. Screen shots below might give you a start

You can see the reason for failure and it gives you some measurements you must meet. That was just a quick look, further investigation might provide further info.

Edit: also the person who failed you should be able to provide more info in the specific thing you failed

Who ever wrote these rules needs to update them as none of the modern cars with HID or projector headlights comply. Have they ever taken note of their pattern for High intensity portion ??? I doubt it.
