Here's a couple of photos of a Sage Green, Chartreuse and Saxon Green set at the Great Australian Rally in January (that mini_fanatic mentioned earlier). The Sage Green and Chartreuse are in original paint; the Saxon Green in 2 Pac. There are also a couple of photos of the Chartreuse car, which is called Maisie and is number 4739 and belongs to Angela Stevenson.

Hope this helps you, 1970minik.

Chartreuse (seen on Morris Major)

Iceberg Blue (seen on Morris Cooper)
Moss Green (seen on Morris Cooper)
Orient Red
Royal Red
Slate Grey

If they were used on the 850 they are indeed rare!

Thanks for sharing the great photos Tony, will have to meet Angela and Maisie with our Saxon Green 850 one day :)

I hadn't heard of Sage Green before. Is it an Aussie 850?

Your 850 looks fantastic Kyoda, Moss Green is very nice - something different from Chartreuse/Saxon/Porcelain/Sage greens

Hi Evan. I'm sure Gary told me it was Sage Green, but I've now done a bit of a search, and Sage Green is a dark green (closer to Moss Green). Maybe it's Porcelain Green?

Tony

Thanks for having a search Tony. I quickly Googled 'Morris sage green' and it brought up several UK Morris Minors, but no Minis. Most were a lighter green that I saw.

His car number is between the latest Saxon Green car I've seen and the first Porcelain Green. Perhaps Sage Green was a very short term colour? However I'd expect we'd have seen something else somewhere about it? It could possibly be either Saxon or Porcelain Green too. (VicRoads enquiry helped me with the number, also confirmed YMA2S1)

Does anyone have a light green 850 with car number 35000-39000 that could help narrow the gap between Saxon and Porcelain green?

Evan

Thanks for the replies everyone, this is great.

The later 64/65 colours are appearing 'rarer' more than others, I assume because they sold less cars with the Van and Deluxe on the market?

If anyone has an original car in Aztec Turquoise I'd love to see a photo of it - never seen a complete car.

Evan

I found Aztec turquoise in the ppg database today, wonder how close to the original it is?

I've now added some Berger 1962 and 1963 colour charts to the paint thread here - viewtopic.php?f=25&t=66469&p=769760#p769760

You'll see Aztec Turquoise is a bright colour, much brighter than Gambier Turquoise used in the 1970's.

I note there's a Taxi Orange as well, although I doubt it was ever used on a Mini. Can't remember ever seeing a Mini taxi.

Morris 1100, you've certainly picked up the rarer colours. Out of interest...

Acacia and Moss Green are the only two colours I haven't been able to find details for either (have seen ~3 Acacia, but only one Moss Green)
Chartreuse - 1961, for cars roughly 3000-8000 (know of 7)
Driftwood - late '62/early '63, know of 3 cars around 20000-21000
Iceberg Blue - 1965, have only seen 1
Orient Red - 1961, one of the first four colours used on the 850, but only up to about car 5000 (know of 5).
Royal Red - 1965, again only seen 1
Slate Grey - 1964, only found 2

In contrast, from the cars I've found Shadow Blue and Saxon Green are by far the most popular colours.

David E, all the best for your material search. The grain may be the same as late 850?

850_Van, I will note that down thanks. There could easily be 850 sedans too, just have to find them!

Evan

I have an 850 Car #1086 in Orient Red

Thank you for adding them winabbey, fantastic. The turquoise certainly stands out.

I've never seen an 850 in any of the Rose/pink colours. Has anyone else?

Do you have much of the original interior wild_willy? (dash cards or door check straps - trying to 'date' some early different ones).

The rose pink cars were mainly Morris Majors.

I do have some of the original trim items you mention including the early seats with the lizard skin pattern. Let me know what info you need.

Is anyone able to confirm what type of paint 850s originally had?

The bulletins winabbey posted on page 2 don't seem to agree with the prefix stamping on the ID plates of cars?
(eg. 1/ENGLISH GREY\3 where 1 = Enamel, but bulletins mention nitro-cellulose and acrylic)

PM sent about the trim wild_willy, thanks

Just been thinking about this, I'd always thought 850s (and 60s Minis in general) were done in enamel?

From all the publications I've found, the prefix "1" for Colour on the ID plate represents 'Enamel'. I can only ever recall seeing "1" on 850s (as per the plates Morris 1100 posted), both before and after car number 4194.

I'm no way a paint expert, but I thought nitro-cellulose and acrylic paint are different to enamel? Am I missing something?

Evan

Evan, yes nitro-cellulose, enamel and acrylic are different types of paint. The resins used in each are different.

If I get chance I'll try to find how many of these original colour standards I still have at work.
