Hello Everybody,

I'm needing to replace a Lucas 16ACR alternator for a '76 Leyland 998 - the bearing as given out and thought it best to replace the whole unit. What would be the best (i.e., lest fuffing around) new option for replacing the 16ACR? Can the 17ACR (for example: http://minikingdomonline.com.au/product ... regulator/) be swapped in without any other modifications, like changing the wiring or the offset of the pulley?

It's physically a straight replacement, as I understand. If you need an adapter for the electrical connection from loom to alternator MKO can provide it.

Or just check out your local auto electrician.... Mine had one that bolted straight in and was significant power upgrade at less cost....

Ian - you didn't have to upgrade any of the wiring in the loom to accommodate the power increase?

Electricity works on demand not supply. So, the amount of wiggly amps your alternator can provide doesn't really matter .. until you use it.

However, if you do have lots of lights (I live in the country) ..and it rains...and you run the heater..and maybe a stereo... and you ran the battery down because the poor Min is hard to start on cold wet nights..., you can ask too much of the standard supply system. Which is why you may want (need:) a larger alternator.

Then, if you are going to use the extra power then you may need upgraded wiring.

But basic physics makes it easy to calculate the maximum amps that the alternator is likely to be asked for. And, if you think you may exceed that, its pretty easy to add a thicker wire (or simply an additional wire) between the alternator and the take off point for all your electrics (likely the solenoid terminal).
