Hi all,

I've been poking around here for a while trying to sort out my own little issues here and there with the resources, experience and information all of you amazingly knowledgeable people have managed to pool together since I bought my first Mini (a standard 998cc '76 Leyland) a few months ago.

Since I've had it, it's been given a decent service and a good tune up as I felt that the car wasn't performing quite as well as it should and I knew that it had sat for quite a time prior to me owning the car. Having said that, I've decided that I want to take the first step into enhancing the performance of the engine without a massive overhaul.

It's currently running the original 998cc engine with a 1 1/2" carbie, and it's been recommended that I look into getting performance extractors, a sports exhaust and new needle in the carbie to get the engine running as best it can without any major modifications.

My question is - would anyone be able to give me an estimate of what I'd be expecting to pay for the parts and work on this?

Cheers,

Alex.

You might be able to get the parts cheaper else where...

But this is what you are looking for.

I got mine from minispares. It made a big difference to stock, although it had a 1 1/4 carb on it before

Yes you're right, that will be the first step, and exactly what I did. However I would recommend looking at getting a kit with cooper freeflow (or maniflow) extractors instead of the LCB extractors (like in the link posted above). I have LCB extractors on my 998, and they are too long - freeflow extractors (or maniflow, or perry extractors as some people call them - perry were the brand who made them in Australia) will probably work better, and you won't be grinding the y-piece on the ground.

Another big improvement for little money is to replace your points with an electronic ignition module something like this. No more adjustment and a much steadier idle.

A stock 998 produces about 30-40 horsepower. At this level the exhaust manifold, intake manifold, exhaust system, etc are not really a limiting factor. Much of the power increase people see from fitting extractors and a sports exhaust is due to the intake and exhaust manifold separation thus allowing cooler, more dense air to enter the engine. This is why, typically, most of the 'stage one' kits quote a figure of around 10% gain in bhp - it's about what you get from separating the standard intake and exhaust. And with these (now) old cars a proper tune-up can lead to similar 'gains' by effectively restoring the original power. As said, a good start with this is a decent electronic ignition module.

All that said, if you're planning more improvements in the future then fitting an exhaust, extractors, alloy intake manifold, good quality air filter, and any other bolt-on mod is effectively 'future-proofing' and you may see a slight improvement in top end performance...

But, as has been the case since its inception, the key to making power with the A series is the cam and the head. Both of which can also be fitted with the engine in the car as long as you're patient and prepared to cut out a slot in the radiator grille...

And the biggest thing - it's all good fun :)

Oh, and can I be that smart arse...

"Yeah bro, easiest way to get power from a 998... Sell it to fund a 1275"

Yeah, nah...

Just to add, the kit I bought from minispares has the Maniflow "Freeflow" manifold as mentioned above. They are easier to fit than the LCB style extractors as they are one piece. My kit was around $450 delivered (although the exchange rate was different last year). The KN filter included is a high flow one, and is washable and never needs replacing.

I fitted it myself and it was pretty straightforward. It only took a couple of hours and would be easier on your car as you already have a 1 1/2" carb. It'd be worth getting someone to tune it up afterwards for the best performance and economy.

Mine is now pretty nippy (although it has the short 3.76 diff) and makes a good noise too.
