Ive just tried to work out my cam timing, following this guide

For max lift on valve i got 115deg

then going to the 0.127mm each way i got

97deg and 128deg so i end up at 112.5deg


then down the page he says

"To anyone who has the RE 13 OT cam please use 101.5 - 102deg ATDC as your timing if useing the push rod method as I have shown in the pictures...104.5 deg ATDC IS THE FIGURE YOU NEED IF YOU USE THE DTI ON THE VALVE GEAR.. sorry for any confusion...this new forum wont let me edit my mistake..ARRGHHH!! "

which means my cam is 11deg out from where i should be? the highest ofset key minisport sell is 7deg.

Am i doing something wrong here?

Your block may have been line bored, with a stock chain and sprockets that retards it.
Years ago I had to use a 10deg cam key (that I made) with an A+ tensioner to save a mate's S motor from the junk pile.
Also, some well known aftermarket sprockets (no names here) were copied from late UK sprockets which were retarded for better emissions.

Put a 9deg key in, it'll be close enough. If you want more, advance the cam sprocket by 1 tooth (= 18deg) and use an offset key to bring it back.

block had never been overbored and machine shop said it was like new, so im guessing it hasnt been line bored.

Is there anything i could be doing wrong? id hate to buy a key for $35 and then it be wrong

1. GR says always check it with the head on, forget using a pushrod and no head- that doesn't load the chain up.
2. When checking timing at those 2 lift points only do this with the crank turning clockwise. ie do NOT back up to get the 2nd point.

Generally I have found in the past you only need a 4 deg or 6deg key to get an RE13 timed at 104-105 deg ATDC.

What would ATDC recommendation for copper s mk1 and mk2 cams?

Vizard's book p284 says 110deg ATDC was recommended for both. However to allow for initial chain stretch, I would use 108.
