Hi Kevin
You must be loosing your memory and eye sight, when I first showed the set up to you I explained to you that it only had about 30mm clearance to the bonnet and I have stated on this forum that it only had about 30mm clearance.
Having sold 16 of these now no one seems to be concerned about air cleaners but you, even the guy in South Africa doesn't seem to be concerned as he is running two ram tubes about 8ins long out of the bonnet, but this is good because he will not suck any rubbish or wild life from under the bonnet , then again if he sucks an elephant down the ran tubes it is easier to stand on the bonnet and lift the elephant of them, but it,s going to be a helava job to get him out from under the bonnet specially if his trunk got sucked into the cylinder
The motor in my LS has ben in there since 1993 and never run an air cleaner but I don't go driving on dirt roads, but it has been run in regularity events at race meetings and has done track days and still going strong after 60000 ks, may be if the air is that dirty we should all be wearing air filters on our face

I could always cut a hole in the bonnet and put a reverse bonnet scoop on it and hide an air cleaner inside the scoop... seems drastic though. I feel a little uneasy to not run a filter.

K&N make the 56-1160 kit, which says the filter in the chrome case is 51mm thick. I'd think you could raise the backside of the bonnet a couple of cm to squeeze it in..

Cheaper on eBay:

There is this one as well, says it is only 45mm thick
http://www.dellorto.co.uk/merchandise/p ... tionID=130

And this one is under 40mm. Don't know if you'd get enough air through?

Just curious, why couldn't you use two pieces of aluminum a hole saw and a sheet of oiled foam to make your own filter?

I don't know... at this point I'm considering a 45mm side draft with a really short ported manifold. Atleast I could squeeze a proper filter on then... what is the longest manifold I could get away with without cutting into the firewall?

Would something like this actually fit without mods?

In the 1960s two time F1 World Champion Graham Hill was a director of Speedwell, here is a bit of what he said about air filters for the A series...

My knowledge on matters such as this are minuscule compared to the likes of Graham. I have nothing but respect for people like him and John Smidt (and many others) and am grateful that they are so accessible to plebs like me and quite regularly give their time and share their information in the interest of the mini community.

I may know two bits of stuff all about the inner workings of an engine but IMHO what this forum provides is an opportunity to bridge the gap between technological retards like me and dedicated geniuses such as Graham. I'm all for listening to healrhy debate about stuff like this but I must say I'm disapointed with some of the "quality" of arguments coming from some corners.

Sorry to hijack ur thread jp but I've been reading all of this with interest hoping to learn something and just get disapointed with some of the rot I read here on ausmini sometimes.

Best currently available `short' one is the Redline 3005. Its design has recently been modded a little for better flow. They are good for 125HP or so when well ported (like mine is, I spent 9hrs in it).

GR's RE5 Weber DCOE manifold flows well and fits, but again, no room for a filter, unless you stick a Weber box in there.

From all of the sand, leaves, and other junk I regularly clean off my crossmember in the engine bay I couldn't, in good conscience, not run an air filter on an engine.

And I'm sure Speedwell (back in their day), Graham Russell, or anybody else telling you not to run an air filter is not going to provide any sort of guarantee/warranty/etc for you engine if you have the misfortune of your engine inhaling something other than air. Now, don't jump down my throat - I'm not saying that they should. If you are modifying your car (or anything else) then I believe it is up to you to do your own research and/or testing to see if what is being claimed 1) is true and 2) fits your circumstance.

And reverse scoops are illegal. I can imagine from that logic that raising your bonnet would also be illegal.
