Does anyone know the name of the 1/2" thick fibrous material that the hessian/jute is stuck to?

Also, what does the piece of insulation under the spare wheel look like?

The bit under the spare just looked like underlay with hessian stuck on the sides to stop it falling apart.

So the soundproofing was...
1 Firewall blanket.
2 Between headlining and roof.
3 Under rear shelf.
4 Under spare wheel.
5 Between boot lid and Masonite trim.
6 Under bonnet blanket. (edited, thanks wild_willy!)
Anything I've missed? (or included that shouldn't be there?)

Original sound proofing material was jute underfelt with a hessian layer on one side. The under rear shelf material was further coated with black latex compound.
See earlier post on availabilty in UK and my pics of a manufatured replica. Very hard to find any jute underlay let alone the underlay with the hessian backing.

There was also an under bonnet sound proofing made from a thin formed mat of fiberglass material and then coated with a black substance.

And most of it isn't in parts books!

Yet all the pieces we've talked about would have to have a part number. :?

I have the under-bonnet mat like wild-willy's, although slightly more the worse for wear.

Here's some photos of the under-bonnet firewall insulation. It's the same jute underfelt as in the boot but with a vinyl sheet stuck on one side. I washed a section of it to show the grain.

These are photos of a late 68 unmolested 1 owner car. I know the owner is on here so I hope they don't mind the photos being posted.

I thought the boot liner also seemed to have a retardant layer also.

Note the earlier cars had a finer grained vinyl than winabbeys later example. I've been told could be same vinyl as moke roof? or ute tonne cover (or black seat vinyl?)

The car is an incredible time capsule and is only a handful of cars off mine too, possibly built the same day or week at least.

Thanks for the photos. My car lost the under bonnet and boot floor sound deadener when it was resprayed. Might see if I can make something up.

The Mk1 'S' used the same underfelt/vinyl combination as the Dove Grey trim fitted to doors of 850'S for the firewall sound deadening. The felt backing was quite thin. I used some 850 trim when I restored my 1967 'S' many years ago and the trim was exactly the same. It seems that the later 'S' used a different material as per Winabbey's example.

I have made accurate templates for all of these sound deadening mats from original pieces. Just need to source a suitable material for the under bonnet piece now!!!! I'll let you all know if I find something suitable.

I found the boot floor insulation in the UK Cooper S parts book (AKD3510) but no luck in any Australian parts book so far. It's called Felt - Boot Floor Bottom and is part 24A81. See item 20 in the following diagram. I'll see if I can find the Australian equivalent part number.

The under-bonnet insulation is also shown: Blanket - Bonnet Insulation (Fibreglass) being part 24A959. We have the Australian part number and engineering drawing for that - HYB3746 called Underbonnet Sound Deadening. I posted material details here - viewtopic.php?f=2&t=70253

If you find something please share so that those of us with GT's may also be able to reproduce it :)

That's the whole point of openly posting photos and other data in a thread like this so we can all contribute to the common knowledge and all benefit. Don't worry, Brenton, you won't miss out. :) I emailed wild_willy some additional bits of information as he had offered to try and source the material.

In case it's of interest below are photos of the carpet underlay from my MK II S.

Also some views of the sound deadening glued to the underside of the turret, courtesy of cd_design (on another forum). His was a Leyland Mini but I understand the Australian round-noses got exactly the same treatment with the same type and size material, although I've not seen it myself. Can others confirm that, please? John Smidt says the mat stuck to the turret was to minimise panel drumming and not specifically for insulation purposes.

All Leyland minis and clubmans I have destroyed have had the matting glued to the roof turrett. So was common to all slab fronts.

Can't comment on roundies, havnt pulled any apart to check
