like I said before, take the fuel cap off and take a quick sniff first. They fuel may be ok, if not the putrid odour of oxidized fuel is unmistakable..

I use a jiggle syphon. Available at all good car parts stores

I call them 'car wankers' :D

If you have an electric fuel pump, you can just disconnect the carby and run the hose to a container, and switch it to ignition.

I think I know what you mean by jiggle syphon; like a small plastic bellows?
Very aware that fumes from an empty tank are much more dangerous that a full tank.
Won't be trying to use the fuel pump in an injected situ.
Might come out a bit too quick!!

This is a jiggle syphon: http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/online ... pid=312556

You post the valve-end into the fuel tank and the other end into a container, and jiggle the hose up and down. Hence, car w@nker.[/quote]
From experience it's alot more comfortable to give the hose a jiggle to get it moving rather than sucking the end.

My lawn mower is exclusively fueled by these little jiggers.

Poor old Briggs and Stratton. It gets all the shoddy fuel...

I was having a problem with my Briggs and Stratton 18hp* Twin. It was kind of surging/hunting and wouldn't idle. I cleaned the carby and it cleared up for a little while but came back again. Then I filled it with 98 octane because that was what was in the jerry can and it ran great, better than ever.
So it has used 98 ever since.
The amount of extra money it costs to run are really minimal when you add it up.

Logged in for the first time in a while and found this thread, awesome!
My mini has been laid up for 2 years and I need to get it out of its storage semi urgently :)
Yesterday I drained the tank, took the plugs out, squirted some oil into the bores and a bit on the rockers too.
Fresh fuel and a charged battery today and I'm getting no joy. I'm pretty sure it's the starter not engaging I'm getting a click and then you can hear the starter spinning but the engine isn't turning over. It turns freely in gear when I roll it back and forth so it's not seized.

Heading back to its storage tomorrow with a bigger bag of tools to take the starter out and give the bendix a clean up which has worked when this happened previously. Any other pointers on what I should look for/troubleshoot?

Thanks in advance! Looking forward to bringing the brick home and finally starting the project!

I don't know mini starters as well as 'normal' starter motors :D but most minis use an inertia type. This means that they are disengaged to start with, but when spinning they push forward and engage with the ring gear. Sounds like yours is spinning, but not engaging. I've heard this can happen when it gets dirty. It's only two bolts plus wires to take the starter motor out - a clean and bench test might be in order.

If the starter pinion's spline needs lube, clean with degreaser then use powdered graphite. If you use oil or WD40 it will attract dust and stick again.

Starter was definitely gunked up but once I got it back on the battery was already flat after only a day and disconnected! Ducked in and got the cheapest Kmart had and that got us going and back home!

Time for the tear down!

Well, it started fine. Battery had plenty of charge, fuel smelled slightly varnishy, but was OK.

Nobody warned me that rats would have nested in it and chewed through the wiring though. Headlights, temperature gauge and a bunch of lights were non functional.

The right rear brake was rubbing as well. I adjusted the shoe slightly and it seems OK.
