Vizard sez that the filter socks can be one of the more inefficent filter setups it might even be enough to undo the good work with your ram tubes. I guess this was a while ago so better filter socks maybe on the market now.

The stub stacks he specifies flow just about as well as any of the ram tubeshe tried but there is no tuning of the induction length.

They just move the torque lower in the rev range.

If the torque spike due to inertia ramming exists outside the useable rev range which I guess is possible then this would be pretty helpful though.

A super free flowing induction system would produce less torque as there is no inertia ramming effect robbing you of torque all over the rev range. You want air speed (theres a better term for it) as well as air flow to produce good power. This is assuming I understood the principle correctly

I am not sure but at high revs I think the inertia ramming thing does not really happen the airflow tends to look more even so there is not the stop start behaviour that causes inertia ramming but I have no foundation for this theory.

The torque is built into the motor by virtue of its specification isn't it?

I think it might also be built into the induction system as this is responsible for the inlet pressures sort of like a supercharger will produce more torque even though the engine internals may not have changed.

my 2 cents

Sorry for the speel I have slowly been digesting Vizards yellow book and well now I have got verbal diarrhoea.

The way I'd been shown this principle is fairly easy to think about.

Ok, You've got a one inch hose, and now, your sucking X amount of water per minute through this hose, imagine how fast it'll have to be moving. (ramtubes)

Now, remove the house, and add a 44 gallon drum. This is your free breathing mode. Now your sucking down the exact same amount of air, but the air doesn't have to move fast at all... there's no pressure. it'll just roll in slowly, as it's needed.

Yes, you can get more water moved with the 44 gallon drum, so it's probably better for high horsepower applications where torque is less required.

Well, that's rough, and pretty much how i was told about it.

I saw Baracade's old 1380 motor (now Ozmotorsport's) on the engine dyno at GR's at Xmas 2003.
We ran and tuned it with GR's Weber stubstacks (short trumpets) then put UniFilter socks on it. Absolutely no difference, still had 110HP.

Note they were dry sox, though. Oiling them would probably drop it a little bit, but I would still do it for street use.
Some racers spray them with WD40....
