It's a "tinkle tinkle" sound heard mostly at low revs (under 2500) when you give it full throttle.

I thought my Yamaha R1 would be the peak of hi tech engine management stuff, but even it can't get away from the crap fuel we sometimes get fed.

When it pings (usually only when very hot and with less than perfect fuel) it's like someone is bashing my engine with ball pien hammers. Can't miss it (or the semi in the rear view mirror).

Just talking to Fred Sayers and he and Graham Russel are both in agreement that max advance should be 28 to 30. Any ideas on this?

Probably about right, for a near stock motor.
My last 1310 (bathtubbed chambers, flat top pistons, 10.4:1 C/R & RE-13 cam) ran at 41*.
I didn't believe it either- double checked it- but every time I knocked it back a degree or two, it lost power.

Graham R says yeah, open chambers DO need more advance, but the higher the C/R the less they need.

Greig Malaure's Nb race car runs about 37*.
My current 1360 is running at 40*. Same head... 8)
