I have a couple of things to change to get my roadworthy.

I need new front shocks. Are there any favourite shock absorber brands or model numbers you people can suggest I get? I have Hi-los in the car, if that will change anything.

I also need to replace a rear wheel bearing. I can get the parts no trouble, but is it a simple job to change them over? I hope it is.

rear wheel bearings are pi$$ easy. Buy a kit- 2 bearings + seal.
I use the ball bearings in the rear- they are cheaper than Timkens and there's no weight or load back there anyway.

shocks are a preferance thing i like spax adjusterbles just from what i have read i got 4 secondhand spax lowerd adjusterbles from brixworks for 300 at the begining of the year mah mummsy was in adelaide so she brought them back as hand lugage
but my nasty uncle wraped them in tape and plastic and rope took me a whole 40 seconds to rip that crap of so i could buff my know over them

edit .... i prefer the timkins taperd espescially if you are runny a wide wheel just because of bearing load that wider wheels can cause .... just my preferance

I fitted the "NEW" timken front wheel bearings in my car the other day, and what a paint in the F---ing ass they were.... i won't use em again, fiddly bastards of things, put them in, check the clearences, pull them out... make the spacer smaller, put em back in again... once u get them right.. the local bearing specialist said they'll settle, so in a week or two, i'd have to adjust them again....what a joke, IMO go the std rollers...

sorry doc... but mine are a bastard, and as a result, i hava noisey front left wheel bearing atm.. which means its stuffed... only lasted 200 miles...

Wow, I've never had that many problems with wheel bearings, but bearings can be damaged quite easily when fitting.
If they are the tiniest bit out of alignment it will take a major part of their lifespan off.
Back ones are very easy to fit - ball or taper, but the front can be easily stuffed from the outset. They might need a lot of brute force to fit at times, but they also need a fine eye for alignment.

Black van,,,the problem is in your hub,,,not the bearings,,,either that &/or you have bumped some sh!t into the new bearing

lets say (for EG: sake) that you fitted the ball bearings in there instead,,,wellllll,,,,how are you gonna adjust out the play cause by the thin shoulder inside the hub now then????....Yeah????,,,welll??????

yeah,,,,that`s right!!!!!!!!!!!!!!,,,,you did well,,,but not well enough,,,&/or maybe you`ve taken tooo much off the spacer & over tightened em,,,yeah??? maybe???

well,,,,only you will know what you have done now

go again mate,,,but be more carefull this time yeah,,,i know,,,easy for me to say over the internet hey?...but still,,,thems the facts,,,not much else ruins tapered timken wheel brgs mate.,,,,too looooses,,,,tooo tight,,,,or crud in there, that`s it, nutin else will stuff em pretty well

& for anyone who cares,,,i use tapered timkens front & rear & that`s it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!,,,i never use ball bearings unless i`m stuck out whoop whoop fixin some one elses mini & that`s all there is at the wheel bearing shop

No offence intended here but--> anyone writing a book about minis 30 years ago may not have experienced such worn or stuffed-with components as we are finding these days.

G'day mate, I had them perfect... but The bearing place i purchased them from, said they will settle in (these people specialised in timken, bsc, and are a major bearing joint locally)my bearings were spinning freely when i put them together and did them up, they wer not binding or anything, i was quite happy with the result... but isnt it alot of mucking about.. in, and out till you get them rite?

Dont get me wrong, I'm not fighting the point, just showing how much trauma and trouble I have had with mine.

The bearings where 100% clean, and packed extremeley well with castrol high temp wheel bearing grease which was also new, and therefore clean.

All things aside, there coming out again this friday, bugger it!

its not possibe to redo them without pulling the hub out is it?
