Kenno was hitting on a plenum chamber subject a little while ago but i can`t find it anywhere so i`ll throw these pics up here & everyone can have a gork

we used to make round (cylindrical) plenums but now we make square (rectangular) ones--> i know that may not make much sense but still, the pics will tell the story better

This is about all these particular hi-los are good for & even then they`re not that good at that either but still , it`s what i use to make my ram tubes


i cut short tubes of alloy & put them in the press ontop of the hi-lo & press away , down to a pre-described point, bang the hi-lo out & hey presto,,, one nice neat cheap ram-tube pipe ready to weld into my plenum/box thing




then we cut out a piece of alloy RHS , mark it then cut & shape it up to suit




they come out a treat when welded & the flange plate for the throttle body is fitted



we taper the bottom of the plenum to help direct & ram/squeeze to share the air more evenly between the inlets,,, but also to help clear the alternator underneath the end of it

i`m trying to find more pics of this stuff but they`re in this computer somewhere

So your new design has the trumpet flush with the edge of the plenum where as the old round design had the trumpet half way inside the plenum correct
I'm planing on doing a hybrid of both those designs. I'm trying to use as long runners as I can mounted half way inside a rectangular plenum. I figure the BMW air box has (roughly) 7" 90* runners so I figure if BMW had long ones I want long ones. Now I just need to get off my but and actually build it like you've done Matt.

yeah that`s correct

& yes i`d like to have long runners inside the plenum but i figure the whole length of the inlet system, throttle body & air filter assy included will do me, as it`s all still a decent sized "mass" of moving air once the engine is running

for a naturally aspirated thing i`d like to do some more homework on longer individual runners yes, for sure, there`s merit there for sure & totally agree it will be well worth the effort,,, but with the turbo donks i`m VERY happy with what we have, there`s PLENTY of grunt More than enough really & absolutely Zero Lag just beautiful wonderful response with lovely usable power delivery

Ok Matt, you have got my ears pricked up!. So does this mean my naturally aspirated set up with the BMW throttle bodies will need one of these plenum's. And I assume it has some sort of air filter attached to the end of it? Because I was picturing the 4 throttle bodies with filters on each one.

I also see the photos of your set ups of engine pipes on a jig for the extractors. Wouldn't they be a standard length and bend for all minis? If so do you have any left?

Different Matt but i'll answer anyway

You can run the 4 throttle bodies with filters on each one, or make an air box for all 4.

Matt's plenum chambers are designed to be used with a single throttle body (ideal for turbo applications but still works with N/A). So the single throttle body feeds air to the plenum chamber, which all 4 cylinders draw from. You can then have some type of air filter before the throttle body. Pretty much all modern cars have a setup like this. Air box/filter -> throttle body -> plenum chamber(inlet manifold) -> cylinder head.

yep, Matt`s right i make the plenum chambers for turbo applications

& yes you can just run filters on the ends of your std BMW throttle bodies.

& the bottom piece of the extractors that you see in the photos were an early attempt to cater for all types of minis & mokes but they don`t fit everything,,, different shifters & different angles & different heights meant it needed to be modded each time we fitted one up,,, hence why i dropped the lower piece out of the equation.

it`s best to have that part made up to suit each different application... i`d much rather people have trouble understanding that part than complain that my bits don`t fit & need modifying

If it's going into a clubby you'll have more room for decent inlet runners and good filters, I'm doing a plenum on my round nose simply because I cant fit all that stuff in front of the head.

yes you can run a plenum before the Quad-throttle bodies on a clubby , similar to what we make for the tubos , simply because you have the room,,, & then with that lot you can run a single air filter at the end of the plenum if you like

& in that circumstance i`d call it an air-box more than a plenum, but still it`s similar

on mokes & roundys tho i`m afraid there`s just not enough room

Yeah, definitely a clubby so I hope it will fit without bonnet mods.
