is anyone else amazed how long this has stayed in 'mini chat'? ...
does A series chat cut it?

hint taken :P

i guess i was having a dig. :P

sometimes you only have to look at the bear and he wakes up, most of the time he needs a good prod, sometimes you have to sharpen the stick... i have no idea where i'm headed with this and my ramblings can void most of my posts from mini chat :D

bwaha ahaha ahahahahah

so anyway, back to putting a BMW head on a 948 - it's not going to be a fire breather, but I think that's beside the point

I drove a Minor 1000 for a while when I first got my P's, and standard 948's pull well enough to keep up with traffic. It'd be a really neat thing to do, if not just for the sake of doing it.

G'day

I would have put this tread in the A series section, but.

I like the idea of keeping the original motor if the 948 would be strong enough to make some extra power.
I am thinking a small supercharger would help the bottom end power and make it a lot more flexible to use.

So that would be a 948 bored for the 998 pistons, BMW twin cam head, BMW used to own Morris so its all in the family, a supercharger and maybe fuel injection

What sort of power would the engine make in road tune?
Who would be best to get to make the motor?
What sort of cost would I be looking at?
Would I be better getting a car with a 1098?

Cheers
Graham

I reckon you should talk to Matt Read aka. TheMiniMan about it. He's the one in Australia building the twin cam head kits, and did the motor in the bronze car on the previous page...

Probably, but I thought there weren't that many Series 4 Minors in Aus - they're all private imports.

if it were me i'd go as big capacity as possible... if you can find a north south 1098 i'd grab it and do the mods to it.

buy hey, i wringed the neck out of my 948 as a P plater and as Simon says they'll keep up with traffic, so with a few mods it''d be a nice cruiser

a twinky with a charger.. now ur talking. i've always wanted to utilise all that vertical space above the rocker cover and mount a charger up there, like a muscle car, but then you'd be covering up that gorgeous twinky.

Graham, you have an awesome project in hand.

First time I ever read about a BMW twin cam conversion was on a Mini 850. It seemed to do alright and the 848 motor is hardly the strongest A series ever made. Better than an 803...

1098cc Morris Minors never made it to Oz, but a 1098cc Sprite engine might be a bit easier to source... 1275 would be better

My mate has a factory Minor 1098 woody, they kept making these in UK long after the Mini started. He bought it here S/H, I have seen quite a few others about.
It's got a 1220 Sprite in it now though with a DrMini head.

If you are going to race a 1098 Sprite motor, the big main journal cranks are really no better then the small J ones. They all can break if you try hard.

G'day

All Australian Minor 1000's had the 948 motor but there are quite a few post early 1960's that were imported from the UK or New Zealand that came with a 1098, they are mainly the Traveller, Woody Wagon but some Utes and a very occasional sedan.
There is a Ute on Ebay at the moment but a standard Ute cabin is no good for me as they are too small.
A late 60's Woody with a Twin Cam head on its original but bored and rebuild 1098 block would seem to be the best way to go, to have a matching numbers car.

Cheers
Graham
