G'day

I am new hear and I do not have a Mini, but I do have one of Sir Alex's first creations a 59 2 door Morris Minor which I have modernised a bit.

Image

The other day I was looking at Retro Rides forum from the UK and was taken by a bloke putting a 1275 into an Austin A30,
what was of particular interest was it had a twin cam head on it.
Since my current project is just about finished, this got me thinking about the possibility of doing another Minor only keeping the A series, a matching numbers Minor with a twin cam would be different, if a 948 is not practical then at leased an A series.
Since I know bugger all about what is being done to the A series these days I thought I would ask for guidance from those who do.

Cheers
Graham

Kad in england make a twin-cam head for the mini, but it costs a fortune.

Otherwise Matt Reid (he is a member here) makes a kit up for a bmw k1100 head (i think i got the model right - its motorbike head anyway) it has either 8 valves or 16 valves. THis method is cheaper but requires more work.

He will comment when he sees this

welcome Graham, you're not the only Minor owner on here. My dad (HJM) has 3, I still have one in his shed, and Hagar has at least one

there's at least one of those getting around, I saw one in Ballarat about 18 years ago, though it wasn't a local car....

Ooh! Maybe even a Vmaxscart Supercharger

Now that would make the old Morrie sit up and be noticed

G'day

Thank you for the comments.

I have done the engine transplant thing on MORRX, injected 6 port 13B and 4 speed auto out of a series 5 RX7 hence the name a mix of MORris and RX 7.

What I am doing now is researching what I can do to modernise the A series, a matching numbers car that went with good usable power would be magic.
I have sum doubts that the 948 could be made to perform well enough but there are some later pommy cars that have been imported with original 1098 engines.
Or would it be better to forget about keeping the original engine and just get a 1275 and work on that?
I like the idea of a twin cam Minor that has an A series not a Japanese transplant.

What I am after is a good usable cruiser, not a race car.

Your ideas would be appreciated.

Cheers
Graham

I don't see any issue with putting a twin cam head on a 948, they're short stroke anyway so should make good use of it

Quote:
With a 948 block one can easily put in Mini Cooper 998cc flat top pistons. However, one would need 1098cc connecting rods (same length as 948, but the wrist pins are different). Using the 998 with 0.060" overbore, one gets a 1050cc engine. with good carburetion and valves (either a 1098 or 1275 head) one gets an engine with the same HP as a 1275, but without the torque. I add that this 998 set up (essentially a Mini Cooper Engine) is essentially square (bore equals the stroke) and so is highly efficient. It likes to rev high, and so is a real racing machine.

Short rods mean lots of HP at high revs and low torque. Conversely, long stroke means low end torque and lower revs.

The 948 was around for a lot longer than the 1098, and was used in lots of makes and models, so it has more applications. As it is under 1000cc it qualifies for racing in another class. It is also a very sweet and stalwart little engine. The 1098, a stepping stone to the 1275, has weaker bearings, poorer balance in my opinion.

948 and 998 cranks have a shorter stroke than a 1098. Late 1098 cranks have bigger bearings.

Simon K,
A few misconceptions in there, for example a +.060" overbore on a 948 (so it's then 64.6mm bore on a 76.2mm stroke) does not a square engine make. Nor is a 948 crank the strongest thing around (it's got thin 850 size bearing webs).

Having put modified 1220cc Sprite engines in Morrie Minuses before, I'd be starting with a 1275... and going bigger and nastier. :P

graham, i love the idea of twin cam on a minor...

why not go the bmw twinky head, i'm sure 'Zombie in a Kombi' will be along soon enough with some info.

other than that option, these are bang for buck with quite a few guys on here using them successfuly now.
