I am not real sure, I am thinking that the ID plate might not belong to that car.

The paint colour does not match the ID plate.
The stamped number does not match the plate and it nothing like the body number that the car should have.

Exactly my thought.

Anyones 1962 Cherry Red 850 missing it's ID plate? haha

How do I now determine what the shell is? Is it a late 850, Minor, Cooper?

The number on the firewall is too high to be one of them. :D

Early 850s had the ID plate attached to the firewall on the passengers side.

My 1960 CKD car has the Australian Car Number stamped on the driver's side next to the speedo hole with the CKD number stamped on the passenger side. Again next to the speedo hole. The ID plate is attached further across and slightly down from this.
The Car Number is also stamped on the rear floor directly behind the driver's seat.

The colour behind your ID plate appears to be English Grey which was used on 1961/1962 cars as far as I know.

Yeah I was thinking Tweed or English Grey. It's going in to be sandblasted today, hopefully that reveals some for numbers etc.

People are telling me to just put the ID back on and forget it happened. I just can't do that, get to the end of the resto and not no what I have. I'm sure rego will be a lot harder now but the more of these cars we have around with the correct details the better in my opinion.

Mike
The RTA in Victoria look for a unique number that is stamped on the car and if that number doesn't belong to any other vehicle then they accept it. When I came to register my Cooper the 4 digit number had been allocated to a trailer and as such they wouldn't accept the number on my Cooper (even though it would have had that number long before any trailer). They then wanted me to stamp a number that they supplied in the body. I was obviously not happy about that and we were able to compromise by stamping the car with the YkA2S1 followed with the original 4 digit Car number. At least this made the number relevant to a 997 Cooper and to the car's original number.

I FOUND ANOTHER NUMBER!!!

So I had a look around today and found another number! It also looks like I have found red paint, this car must have been resprayed and resprayed well.

So why are there two numbers?

The red paint is the undercoat.

The top number that was hidden by the ID plate is the body number.
The lower one is the car number, it should match the ID plate.

Bugger. So we are most likely looking at a late 850 in something like English Grey?
