I might've posting prematurely, but how'd the measuring go? Is the engine transplant feasible?

We have a Golf tdi (the older 1.9L version) and it's a great car, but a bloody big & heavy motor for a mini.

Hey All,

Checked out the Code of Practice, called several engineers and QLD Transport and it looks like the mod is illegal.

http://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/~/media/b3ea8 ... ctions.pdf Page 22.

Supercharged\Turbocharged 1100kg or Under.

Original Weight x 2.5

640kg x 2.5 = 1600cc

So, illegal :( at least I can go 1.6 TDI, shame as the engine I was looking at would of probably fit with some serious work though.

Cheers, Sam

Alright, been reading more, still can't tell if it can be done or not (If I get it engineered?) it all seems really tricky, would be great to have the law laid down once and for all so I know, anyone who can shed some light, that would be great!

Cheers, Sam

No, you've read the National Code of Practice right, 1.6L maximum for forced induction in a mini.

They don't make any extra allowance for oil burners.

well,,, see now i have to agree with Dean (Again) cuz eviro-crab :-)

& yes damn good tow car that wood be :-)

My dad always had this idea of making up a duel cab Kimberly Ute, he has the items needed (cars) to make it & a decent sized turbo deeshole in that thing would be mega :-)

we were going to whack a frnt/w/drive alloy v8 in there if he ever did the body job & of course i probly would have just turbo injected it too :-)

but , times are tough, petrol is going to be even more of a rip off soon, & double compresed deeshole is most certainly (in my opinion) the way of the future, just look at Audi 24hr de Mans :-)

& of course environ-mentally we have to be thoughtfull too of course

a tiny turbo deeshole would be cool in a brick tho, add electric back-up power to the rear wheels easy enough & hey presto good little fuel efficient & long life, even add gas injection for a bit more pace for me tho :-)

& don`t worry bout my obviously incorrect method of displaying (the spelling) of the word Diesel , i just like spelling it deeshole :-)

We don't mind your grammar, so in the scheme of things, I don't think that's a problem. :)

I've always liked the idea of a diesel in a mini, and any modern turbo diesel will be able to do more than you can throw at it (OK, so probably not the best for track days, but for a street car, it would be great). I drive a 1986 diesel hilux, which is about 85hp (by memory) - many modern small turbo diesels have more power than that. But we can still tow cars much larger than the ute itself.

Get a turbo diesel, and use it to tow your track car 8)

I have a 77td golf. It is noticeably heavier in the steering and cornering compared to the petrol golf I drove. Looking at my engine I think it is too big and probably too heavy. Sure is a nice deisel though, i get 1200 ks to my 55 l tank.

Hey Guys,

Lockie came over last night and helped me strip the final parts off the Mini, while we were at it we measured up the engine bay, and are off to measure up a DV6TED4 Turbo Diesel to see if it will fit, will post up later what we found out!

Cheers, Sam

Hey Guys,

Cheers for the link 74snail, will have a read through, looks very interesting.

We did a measure up, and it looks like it will fit, sort of. Will need to modify the firewall slightly to give more clearance, but if we can do that (checking it out now) then it should be good, and all systems go to get an engine and start! If anyone knows more about modifying the firewall that would be grand.

Cheers, Sam

no idea on sizing..

but there must be few Hyundai i30's or ford focus (?) that have been written off by now, should be able to pick up a wreck or front cut somewhere.

last state rally i went to there was an i30 competing, and it was hooking along quite nicely.
