I had a look on wikipedia and couldn't find a heap of info. Basically it's a 1.6L (could be turboed in a mini ), an odd 96bhp ish N/A, can't tell if it has high and low range (like a real 4WD) but I reckon it would be more like a AWD or FWD option .

It's not actually an import Cultus, it's a locally sold Swift variant. A few hundred were sold here in Aus new. I've seen the odd one on eBay before.

The driveline can be transplanted into a swift with some work, and the swift 1.3 GTi head fits this block producing a 1.6 DOHC engine.

I guess in theory it could all be transplanted into a Mini.

just don't break anything in the rear driveline or gearbox adn try and buy spares!

i've been wondering about the rear end in those ugly little holden 4wd things, can't remember their name, from 3-4 years agon, but at least they're a bit more modern and many more around at the moment for spares...

hoping one day to do a nutso project like that!

holden cruze - it's a live axle though, if you see one, have a look, very agricultural

The Holden Cruze YG was a Suzuki Ignis.

but I don't think the suzuki came out here as 4wd, but the cruze did

The Holden cruise was a 1.5 litre AWD, the Suzuki Ignis was a 1.3 AWD.
The Ignis with the 1.5 litre engine was the sport variant, FWD only.

It's not exactly AWD in the traditional sense, its just a front wheel drive arrangement and when a wheel slips the back wheels kick in till the front stops spinning.

I believe the Terrios and Honda CRV/HRV have similar setups.

This Suzuki is actually full time AWD.

There was quite afew small cars with AWD option in Japan, such AWD Starlets. A guy on Toymods was fitting an AWD starlet with a 4EFTE but I don't know if he finished it.

Its a very common thing to do these days at the car can be marketed and sold as a 4wd when in reality it isn't. Climb under any of these cars and you'll see the driveshafts and CVs are tiny and mostly there for the ride rather than provide anything useful.

It does have some use, like here:

But for most people on the street its a feature with little benefit.

Except they can be deluded into thinking it's ready to tackle the Birdsville track.

I drove down the Birdsville track in dad's Morris Minor when I was 13 - fark, that's 21 years ago

I've looked at the Suzuki ignis/Holden cruze. From what I can find out the Australian Suzuki's were only FWD and the Holden was AWD, they have weak gear boxes. But very nice compact transfer cases, could be good in a starlet mini with the diff being off center .
