Being stormed past....scary!

And some good timing with the sound.....my mate Mark's 180sx

Unfortunately only for facebookers until I work out how to do it another way!

really easy to put them on youtube... ;)

from what I've heard, the test and tune days are a lot less scary than the "fun days" where they'll let anyone and anything on the track, all at once - and when people start going too fast, they send more cars out

There's a sprint happening on June 10th - I've been working towards it, but not sure...

Here's a Monaro blasting past... A second earlier its grill was filling my rear vision mirror, and at this point it was making my ears bleed.
They just carried so much speed through the corners.

The vids are on my mates phone, so I'll have to get him to email them to me. Not sure what the go is with facebook, they are set to "show everyone"

I heard some bad stories about the "fun" days, but for $30 for the day you get what you pay for.

Was thinking about going to Sandown on the 11th June, but I'm going to be interstate.

Going to get up there again soon, but also want to have a crack at a couple of hill climbs. I'm not sure, but I think the street tires will be less of a factor there :? ... We'll see.

PS: I've put the semi slicks on hold until I wear out the A539s I have. I figure there's no point until I can't go any faster with what I have. [/img]

Another note on the Test and Tune days: I was surprised at how laid back it all was.
No Scruiteneering, No driver's breifing, Noone checked my CAMS licence.
We just paid our $130 and drove onto the track with the other sedans.

we were quite a bit slower than many of the cars out there, so we went out for the first few laps and when the tires started to go off, we went back into the pits and let the big boys play.
This worked out well, and for most of the sessions we only had a few cars out with us with the faster guys coming out later in the session.

If inconsiderate driver's were out there you could see how it could quickly turn into chaos.

yeah thats the only problem with winton is the variety you get up there.. for example if we go up in the mini challenge car were doing 1:36's so the closing speeds to the slower guys are quite big but if everyone uses their heads its ok, i think if you hold your line the fast guys will go around

Yeah, if I saw the guys coming from a fair way off, I would stay off the racing line on the straights, but I just tried to hold my line through the corners and stay consistent and the guys got past pretty easily.
There was a few times I got a car dart down the inside of the corner under brakes, where I had to change my line to avoid them, but these tended to be the "club" racer spec guys rather than the full race cars.
At the end of the day it was great fun and a heap of guys came up and chatted about the mini and noone shouted at us, so I guess we didn't piss too many people off!

Hallsey, it was awesome. you have to get up there next time! :D

I'll let the photos do the talking:

I had thought the gasket had blown through, but I pulled off the exhaust wrap to find this.
Its what you get with a cheap chinese stainless manifold. :(

So I'm in 2 minds now:
1. Borrow a TIG and try to fix what I have (I have never TIG'd before only MIG) :?

2. Buy a new thick walled mild steel manifold and dump pipe to suit a TD04/TF035 (Subi forrester XT) - I have a TF035 sitting in a box in the garage which looks to be in pretty good condition.

Hmmmm.......

If it's cracked twice like that already, I'd be ditching it for sure... Either new manifold to suit the old turbo (probably heaps cheaper, won't need to change anything else) or get a new manifold to suit the new turbo which will probably need a further mod to match up the back of the turbo with the old exhaust.
I always love an upgrade but hate the extra costs involved!

You're on the same page as me, but:

Also, I haven't taken the manifold off the car yet to see the full extent of the cracking.

While you have the manifold etc off, fabricate a brace between the turbo and block, or dump pipe and block. I've seen manifolds crack before under the (unsupported) weight of a turbo and exhaust.

Like this maybe? (click for bigger pic) :

Definately go for option number two.

Those cheap stainless jobs are very thin-walled, and continual heating and cooling (heat cycling) just fatigues them and they ultimately crack - as you ave found out.

They are usually too thin-walled to repair successfully.

Buld yourself and new manifold from thicker walled stainless or mild steel for the new turbs and go from there. They arent that hard!!

Cheers,
Tricky
