Hey Everyone!

Sorry if this has been covered before, but I am very curious if anyone has put a Turbo Diesel in a Mini before? Not a one off random custom race only, but a street legal one? I was driving to work the other day and it got me thinking if a little fwd turbo diesel engine + box would fit?

Cheers, Sam

The most obvious one I can think of is the Fiat Uno 1.4 turbo diesel it would be an interesting conversion BUT it would be a lot more sensible to convert a Morris 1100 or Morris 1800 to a turbo diesel , if I had the budget, a good engineer to approve it, and the garage space I,d love to have a LandCrab turbo diesel , it would make an awesome tow car for your Mini

the biggest problem's in converting a Mini to turbo diesel , weight distribution re handling/ steering and the height of the motor , also a new wiring loom ( it might need a 24volt loom )

Yes, a LandCrab turbo diesel , that would be awesome !!!!! 8) :)

Hey 74snail,

Thanks for the reply! Yeah it may be suitable for another car, but I am wondering if there is a nice lightweight TD out there.. regardless, thanks for the info mate!

Cheers, Sam

don't quote me on this but i thought a while back some bloke put a 3cyl turbo diesel out of a charade or similar into his clubman and was getting huge mileage out of it.

Shouldnt effect the weight distribution too much. After all a series is all cast iron.

Only problem is finding one small enough. Is there a new swift diesel engine? Or the new fiesta diesel?

I would like to see someone put a Fiat JTD engine in a mini. It's begging to be done.

The 1.3l model is up to 105hp and it's apparently the smallest four cylinder diesel available. It can also get 3.3l/100km. They're in the new fiat 500's and other small cars.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JTD_engine

There are 3-cylinder diesel charade conversions, however I wouldn't bother, really. They're about as powerful as a stock 998.

There's a diesel 3cyl charade engine in a moke up in QLD.

Runs on bio-fuel too, it was covered in TME in the engine conversions issue (not sure what number)

It was referred to as bio-moke

Thanks for the replies guys!

I have been thinking about it more and more and reckon it could be quite possible and quite a weapon if done right. What am I up against as far as laws and does anyone know what the engine bay sizes are or how to tell if an engine will fit in? I am trying to get a list of small TD engines together.

Cheers, Sam

This one had me thinking into the wee small hours last night. The Fiat Punto, still a relatively new car in Australia, has the 1.3 engine. Doing a little bit of research.. the engine has 66kW and 200Nm of torque matched to a 6 speed gearbox.
Capable of 0-100 in 11.9 seconds in a car weighing 1145kg. Quoted average fuel consumption 4l/100km.

There are chips you can buy to increase the output as well.

Two pranged cars are noted in the Trading Post this week for parts here in Melbourne.. so might give them a call and see how much they want for the donk/box/wiring.

It's certainly an interesting thought though. If you've read the Wanted section, you'll know I'm on the lookout for a roundie van. I was looking to go the 1275 and 5 speed box for it, but the idea of a diesel van... hmmm

Hey Our Daisy,

It's been on my mind every day since I thought of the idea, I am so very keen to do it, I have been looking arround doing some research, I want to see if a Golf TDI engine will fit, I hope it will, but I have my doubts. If there are two up for grabs and you only need one, let me know mate!

Sam.

I have seen discussions about using the Peugeot motors in England. I am not sure which type though.

Yeah? That's slightly reassuring, I looked at some photos, they look like a small little unit, its a 6 speed semi-auto. Around 330nm, 134 hp, 100 kW.

2.0L DW10B I4 diesel

That's the engine type/code I think if anyone wanted to know.

Sam.

Ok!

Going to see the engine tomorrow, measure it up and take some photos. I took some measurements of my engine bay & subframe but if anyone has some good "guide" measurements or tips to see if it will fit that would be great!

Cheers, Sam
