There is a separate ratchet & pawl mechanism inside, also driven by the cable- that drives the odometer forward. What happens is the number tumblers stick, then the ratchet slips and doesn't drive. Sometimes you can fix this by removing the brass ratchet arm (easy) and sharpening the blade on it.

I'll give you an old speedo to play with.. :wink:
