I know that the conversion has been done with the 1L engine, but has anyone heard of or seen a conversion done with the Daihatsu 1.3L EFI G200 engine..?

I have an entire car basically with engine at my fingertips with heaps of mods done already (cam, bored, stroked, extractors, exhaust blah blah) with four wheel disc brakes, air con etc but dont want to spend the money on this to find the engine doesnt fit or will cost a bomb to get a subframe created.

If you are talking about why I would rip apart the Charade, well its to fit the new 1.6L import.

The whole plan was simple. Replace the Charade engine with a Detomaso import 1.6L. Replace the Mini engine with a 1.3L worked Charade engine. :wink:

All this while STILL having Mo on the road. Maurice is getting all the nice bits. 8)

I havn't looked a the size..but i'll go with a yes..

You'll definately need a custom subframe made, how much this will cost and whether it's worth it is anyone's guess

I toyed with the idea of using a Charade 1.3 if I couldn't get an alternative (eg. The Starlet Motor). Having had a look at the Starlet and a Charade body wise I would suggest engine wise they would be pretty identical. Yes the motor would require a custom frame. Cost no idea. Outcome a bloody ripper...

68 it depends, I am making my own right now (actually subframe is finished and painted) and I bought in the engineer before I even picked up a welder. Have sent him pictures at different points and he seems very happy with my efforts. Once its running he is going make me give it a thrashing under test conditions. If it passes I have my certificate that simple. Check out my site its all there...And if I can do it anyone can...Also does anyone know an Andrew Treloar up in QLD because he has just started welding up a custom subbie with a little bit of input from me. :roll: :twisted:

Just make sure you get an engineer on board from the start rather than present them with a fait de compli, they hate that. And shop around as alot of engineers will just go nar its not possible or it has to made of carbon fibre and is aligned using lasers if you know what I mean... :x

Yeah so far $200 - $250 in steel cost and maybe $120 for welding consumables....? and 68 your right about time, you need lots of it, if you wanna do it properly :wink: Good Luck.

and can apply the 'theoretical' calculations regarding stress, strains and fatigue
if needed
but dont want to

can i ask what you're doing it based upon
is it good old intuition?

and what kind of engineers did you approach

shite im talking myself into this
might have to go ahead :shock:

I am modifying the Daihatsu because if anyone knows anything about the Detomaso in Japan, you will know what a beast these things can be.

I am modifying the Mini because if anyone knows anything about the modified Minis with late spec Jap engines on here, you will know what a beast these things can be. :wink:

Matt, have just read what you were saying and have two quick questions.

1. Do you plan this on paper or is this a mould, change, weld, unweld, change, check, modify, weld again, check, change etc etc process...?
2. What do you say to an engineer..? I understand building, so if I want something built I go to an architect who draws it all up and then I talk to a builder who understands from the drawings what brick needs to go on what brick... but what do you take to an engineer..?

(apologies for stupidity... the simple questions come before the hard and more technical ones oh master..)

Just hope it doesn't take you as long as me...
Good advice on speaking to an engineer BEFORE you start. Also here in WA you can get a modification permit "pre-approved" (but I'll need and engineer's cert. too).
