Its about time I update this thread.

I have recently been to a couple of dyno day shoot outs. One with Ausmini at Dyson Automotive in Geelong and the other with the club that I've joined who organise track days, which was held at RE Customs in Springvale.

For the Mini Day I just pulled the mini out of the garage, filled it with fuel and put it on the rollers.
It was running 11psi boost and I got 120.3 Hp at the wheels.
[When I scan it the graph it will go here!]

Anyway I checked the tyre pressures afterwards and was only running 24&25 psi, which apparently zaps a lot of power on the rollers.

For the next dyno day I pumped the front tyres to 35psi and increased boost to 12psi (still easily within the safe range for the standard ct9 turbo (they tell me up to about 14psi is good)) and achieved a scorching 102.0 kw (136.8 hp) at the wheels.
[When I scan it the graph it will go here!]

For the 2nd day they also took the car to a bit higher revs as the graphs will show. This might have got me a smidge more killawasps.

Image

At both dynos they said that from experience they usually see between 25 and 30% loss from an engine dyno, so taking 25% it converts to about 160 hp and 182 hp at the flywheel. :D :D

Standard power is 133hp at the flywheel.

To say I'm stoked is an understatement. For info on the mods, see previous posts.

Here are a couple of photos I took at the 2nd day. (for 1st day pics see past event photo forum)

The car of the day. This subtle evo X had 294kW at 4 wheels!

P.S: Check out the new "The Mini Experience" magazine - Hybrid engine special. There's a hot yellow mini van in there!

It will be a long drive, but I'll try to organise it. It would be great to get up there! 8)

Small update with the van:

I have registered for a track day at Winton this Sunday! [Can't wait]

So have been trying to tick a few things off my ever increasing wishlist before it rolls out onto the track.

The main thing: fuel surge tank
Image
Under the load area floor where there is heaps of room. This should allow me to corner with less than 1/2 a tank of fuel without worrying about starvation. Its just a shame the alloy tank wont look like that for too long under there!

Also a bit more safety never goes a stray:
Image
I have a extinguisher behind the driver's seat, but this is easier to get to if I ever need it on the track.

I also hooked up a LCD thermo couple to measure the inlet air temperature, as I've been running a fairly small capacity resevior for my water to air intercooler and it tends to warm up a bit when I'm driving it hard for extended periods.
Basically I wanted to quantify the temp and check to see what if any improvement is made as I make changes to the system.
Image
[Current w2a i/c resevior ~0.6L + rad, heat exchanger, hoses etc]

The main thing I'm going to try is to increase the water capacity of the system, as I found the air temp goes from a steady 30 deg C (ish) off boost up to about 45 when I'm really giving it the berries.
It cools back down prettty quickly when I'm off boost again, so hopefully more thermal mass in the system will keep the air temperature a bit more consistent. i guess I'll find out how well it works. :D

EDIT: geez, my speeling is bad tooday

Nice work there James. Should go great around Winton. Let us know your times when you get back and enjoy.

I love Winton. One day I'll get mine done and get back up there. Only been twice. First time there I lunched a motor, second time the car was rolled and totalled (By my little brother - next time no-one gets to drive but me!)

Good luck,
Madmorrie

haha... I'll try and post some pics up soon, but I didn't take any of my own so.....

WINton was awesome. so much fun!

I've never done a track day before, but really encourage everyone who gets the chance to get out there.

The mini went so well. the driver less so, but I have to work on that! :D

Driving impressions? well I was expecting a pretty exciting beast, but on the track the mini really seemed to be in its element.
Power was never going to be a problem, and in a straight line the mini was really strong. Quicker than anything in the group I was in down all the straights.
There was a fair bit of tail out action under brakes, but it never felt uncontrolled. Instead I could be as aggressive as I wantedwith the brakes and steering wheel and still come out the other side of the corner [relatively] unscathed! (not the fastest way though)
Understeer wasn't as bad as I was expecting either, although mainly because I only really used 3rd and 4th around winton. If I changed into 2nd for some of the slower corners I really had to be careful getting on the throttle out of the corners.
The brakes were really strong and towards the end of each session (~6-7 laps) were getting a bit spongy were not near as bad as the tires which really needed a cool down after about 3 hard laps. (heeeello semi slicks)

No overheating or any sort of reliability problems surfaced despite the 30 degree day (thank you Mr Toyota) and I drove home at the end of the day. (actually I blew a intercooler hose off in the last session, but it was an easy fix)

My best lap was a 1:54:06 but I improved almost 2 sec per lap from 2nd last session to final session, showing that the real weakness is the driver and there is a heap more pace left in the mini.

So much fun!

For reference we were racing on the long circuit (3km) and the lap record is 1:14.56 and the fastest guys on the day were running about 1:37 in race spec mitsu evo x's.
The V8 spercars record is about 1:23.
The V8 utes record is 1:39.25.
The HQs record is 1:43.8

So yeah, I've got a way to go yet, but not a bad start for a first timer in a home made car!

awesome - well done!! I was expecting you to come back with about 1:52, so improving 2 seconds a lap you'd be well on the money :D

for further reference, a very good driver in a standard but lightweight SPi Mini was gets just a shade under 2 minutes, and an even more experienced fella in a worked 1500cc datsun 1200 ute gets 1:44's

must have been some pretty slow race spec cars, a good improved production car will bang off a 1 33 with a 36mm turbo restrictor.

Well done James. Glad to here the toyota was up to some track time.

As I said, I'm itching to get back there to beat my best time. I did a 2.04 with a worked 1150 in my first Morris 1100 on bob jane all rounders. I wrung it's neck all weekend and drove home, but by then it was smoking (popped a gudgeon circlip and wrecked the bore).

Anyway, hopefully one day soon we can take them all up there for a blast.
The starlet gt motor should liven things up a bit and be a touch more reliable.

Cheers

well done mate, winton isnt the easiest track to go fast around.. fastest ive been around there is a 1:37.9 in the 944 so those evos were pretty slow lol but for a road car you cant expect to be anywhere near race cars.. will be racing the mini there next year i reckon they would do a 35 quali lap. what tyres are you running? you said semi slicks, but they cant be good ones if your only getting 3 laps out of them..

anyway well done mate, now u wont be able to stop
