Hello;
We are restoring a 73' Aussie Built Clubman GT and are trying to make sure our engine was the original one the car came with. As far was we can tell, it was.....the engine started life bright green and that was the original colour, and the engine and chassis numbers match.

We have been told that some of the Clubman GTs had Cooper S engines but also some had whatever was lying around thrown together under the hood.

Could anyone enlighten us as to any keys for identifying our powerplant, and whether it was the original? Interpreting the Engine numbers...etc.... :cry:

UPDATE: Have now fitted suspension and attemtped to reinflate Hydrolastic system, have a leak however, All pipes and connectors have been checked....very bad news.

Thanks for that...opened up some new questions

"But officially the engine number for the Clubman GT is 1200/____."

Ours is 1206/1181. It appears all is well here.

If its of any use to anyone trying to help, I've lifted the following numbers from the block:

035, 14B, 12G 1279.

Mean anything to anyone?

Also our car's build characteristics seem to be different to most other Aussie GTs, the car is built to be pulled to pieces quicker than most other clubmans....We have been told that there were a few very high revving cars made for the police...our car was brought over to race, is it possible this is one that got away?

I don't recall the fuzz having Clubman GTs in Oz, - they went from MK2 Cooper S, to Torana GTRs.. then Chargers..!

<edit> in NSW, anyhow.

Yes, the NSW Police had some. To quote Pedr Davis from Spotlight on Mini Minor Down Under "NSW Gendarmerie will get specially tuned versions of the Clubman GT - top model in the 4 car range - for pursuit work plus the regular Mini Clubman for station work". Info is hard to find, but I believe the mods were 2x1-1/2" SU's, 731 cam. He does not say whether they actually took possession of the cars, so may well have ordered then cancelled as the 'big 6's and 8's' were beginning to appear on the market.

The car was homologated for Bathurst Late 71/early 72 cars (minimum 200 built to race spec). The cars originally used the left over bits from the ceased production of the MkII Cooper S, including the powerplants which had the 9F/Xe/Y engines (stamped on block), although officially it was the 'new' engine number system used (here in NZ anyway!)- 120x/xxxx. My orange resto car has this. In other words - full Cooper S spec, inc motor. As the motors were used up, they moved to a 'standard' 1275 block which had the 120x/xxxx number stamped on. These blocks do not have the engine side covers of the S motor. This is the only difference as all the internals etc. were S spec. I believe that all late 72 and 73 cars will have the 'non S block' - check yours for absence of side covers.

As I said before, information is pretty hard to find on these cars but I'm pretty sure that the Bathurst cars had the 'genuine' S motors in them, seats without headrests and the ignition switch in the centre panel, same as a round nose as one of my previous GT's was like this (wish I knew then what I know now!!!). Leyland then introduced head restraints due to legislation passed.

Your engine number of 1206/1181 is a GT motor. Check also for the numbers stamped into the radiator cowl and the body number on the firewall. I've updated the pic of my orange car which now clearly shows this stamp.
See http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~gavin.agnew/resto1.html for pic.

Hope this helps.
Gavin

Geez, I would't quote Pedr Davis because there are sooo many errors in his book 'Spotlight on the Mini Minor Downunder'

Wasn't the last GTs made in 1972?

I have a Cadiz December 72 GT that I thought was about the last.

I'm sure I read somewhere that a GT engine block starts 1200 then a series of numbers
.
I know that 1204 is a Moke

I will find out later what the 120_ is for the Police pack and there is a 120_ for a factory replacement engine too.

Rupert

As far as I can tell, the GTs were made well after 72, however the hydrolastic was phased out in March/April and replaced with the standard cone setup.

How about a December 1972 with dry sus??? is it real or replaced.

I'd love to know it's history;
It is an ex Canberra car, then sold to a guy in Nanango in Queensland, Cadiz (orange) dry fully adjustable suspension, original paint NO RUST, delete option stripes (ie; no GT stripes).

a 72 with dry suspsension? If you mean cones, then thats aftermarket. The Clubmans were fitted with Hydros until April 73 when they switched to rubber cones, from reading off the Tasmanian Website.
