before you do anything.

TALK TO AN ENGINEER!

they are cheap, and will ensure that anything you do will be OK. they wont tell you if its a bad idea, they'll tell you how to go about the conversion. this way you'll be able to register and insure the car.

If your not confident with your welding then id pay someone to make you one or buy one made.... The last thing you want is for it to fall to bits

Definitely talk to an engineer first. But also don't be too discouraged to have a go yourself.

I can weld a bit and just have a stick (arc) welder. I made my subframe and tacked it together. The engineer is happy with it so now I will get someone who really can weld to finish weld it for me so it's nice and strong.

But it has taken a bloody long time to do. If I could have bought one of the shelf, I would have...

Agreed! I can't weld very well, but went and bought a MIG welder (mainly cos i wanted to teach myself to weld anyway), however i've been slowly getting parts made and plan to do some tacking - but will ultimately get someone to do final welds.

Been at it for a few months and still don't have a complete front sub-frame!
