Replaced the 2 tiny copper rivets that hold the radiator front side on, with a couple of very short M3 screws, nuts and Loctite.
Looks OK and is probably stronger.
Can't seem to buy these rivets anywhere around here anyway.

Finished re wiring the backend of Marcia. I knew the fuel pump wire had fused and it was all the way. So I ran a new wire all along and wraped some of that wire cover all along the loom. All other wires are good. Had to pull the passenger side roof lining down thou

sounds like you're on the right track to getting the brakes working the way they're supposed to - when all the parts are in good condition, drums work well

tonight I removed my distributor and put a blanking plate over the hole in the block (left the drive in there for now), also fitted some different air filters on some intakes I made, and changed the oil :)

Since I fitted the 88*C thermostat the K has been boiling after only a few K's, so pulled it out and stuck it on the stove with a thermometer. Turns out it doesn't start to open until about 91*C.. that's a bit hot, methinks. Back to the 82*C item...

Also while I was in there yanked the old water pump off (pressed steel impeller variety) as I have a new high-volume cast impeller item ready to go on. After 8 years on the car the old impeller was in surprisingly good shape, very little corrosion evident. Most surprised, although I do run glycol coolant pretty religiously so that's probably helped.

Now have to put it all back together again..

Spent more money on it, this time a genuine 60s Moto-lita steering wheel. It will need a bit of restoring.

Spent the morning machining a bunch of (usually unobtainium) late Oz type wiper shaft escutcheons for Mini King.
These are those rubber/plastic thingys on top of the body where the wiper arms go on.

After a long time in storage, i got my 61 850 out and gave it a clean and its now finally under cover. Considering its been outside for the last 8 years i think the original paint isnt too bad.

Put the K back together after yesterday's dismantling effort.

  • Fitted the new cast-impeller water pump, and a new fan belt.
  • Refitted the radiator and left the 88*C thermostat in, in the hope the high-flow pump solves my boiling problem.
  • Fitted brand new thermostat housing studs to replace the cruddy Zenith bolts which were in there.
  • Cut a new set of gaskets and fitted them with a bit of Permatex sealant. I must be getting good at this, the whole thing sealed perfectly on the first attempt
  • Dropped the oil and replaced with a fresh slug of KMX. What came out appears to be doing a fair job of turning back into coal, but then it's been probably 2000mi since the last change.
  • Warmed it up and waited with kitchen thermometer in hand for the thermostat to open, so I could measure the radiator temp. And waited. And waited. And gave up waiting, and took it for a fang instead. On return, the coolant measured almost exactly 88*C :D Happy with that, now maybe the oil will stay clean a little bit longer.
