Which would be better for cleaning up soem brakes.......they are quite bloody filthy aswell.

I was qouted $50 foir acid dipping of swivel hubs, calipers and dust plates.......

which one would be better though?

I wouldn't do either, I'd clean them up first...
Take them apart, soak in some diesel or kero for a few days, hose off. Hit with some spray degreaser and hose off again. (if in Sydney, don't tell the water use police... )

Sand blasting will bugger up any machined surfaces- like balljoint threads, bearing recesses in hubs etc.

thats what i thought with regards to the sand blasting.....hence why i looked into the acid dipping

Ive already had a crack at cleaning them.....i took to them with a small wire brush and attacked them with CRC Brakeleen and some leftover Loctite cleaner!!! They are still filthy!!!

I've been cleaning up a load of parts over the last few months, ive found that a wire brush disc works well. The ones you put into your power drilll, or your bench grinder.

obviously you need to be careful not to touch any of the machined areas, but its great for cleaning up the rest.

I usually leave stuff to soak overnight or for a few days first, usually in the parts washer (diesel) then wipe it off and then if needs be use the wire disc, then use prep wash and wipe off all the dust and crud, and go over it again if needed.

Would the acid dipping be any good for them?

Im currently reconditioning a set of 's' brakes. They were covered in thick brake dust, grease, dirt you name it. I just used kero and degreaser and a wire toothbrush. the calipers are nice and shiny now and look brand new!, hubs are spotless. i wouldnt bother acid dipping just buy some degreaser and kero and use it genorously.

Yeah im going to give it a go 2morrow.....hopefully itll clean it all up!

When I rebuilt my HS4 carb I acid dipped it - but only because I had the appropriate stuff at work - and the acid wasn't too strong. Basically, I could have achieved the same result with carby cleaner and elbow grease. I definately wouldn't pay $50 to get it done. You could probably achieve the same thing with a bucket full of degreaser / kero / whatever and leave it for a day.
