Yeah well, most of the later type "CV" type bike carbs are the same in design as an SU, they`re simple constant velocity cabs with tapered mixture needle just like an SU, only that they have the benefit of being avaliable really cheap (if you look in the right places, i paid $42 for a full set of 4x 38mm bike carbs off e-bay a little while ago) The down side is that you need to make/modify a manifold to fit the things & that`s not really a down side if you can make stuff. it`s also just a little bit different to the "average" & also they tend to flow quite well.

Altho The earlier flat slide type carbs aren`t really "That" good for down low drivability situations but are dam good "Up-top", but in saying that,,, some of the very late ones are really good down low,,,, Hhhmmm ,,, just love contradicting myself now & then, just to keep you all on the ball :-)

& yeah, the "Electronic" type SUs are normally just an auto choke type thing, usless pieces of shite if you ask me, cause most times the Aussies have no spares or info avaliable to sort the dam things.

I have some carbs here of an 160hp outboard. They are bloody small and bloody simple looking. They look a hell of a lot like reece fish carbs.

For ages I thought that when people were talking about fish carbs I thought they ment outboard carbs

So what about needle changes or mixture adjustments Matt? Do you make your own needles or are they otherwise tunable to your application?

Mick i havn`t actually fitted & tuned a pair on a mini yet, but it`s just a tapered mixture neede like an SU & i mod SU needles myself all the time so i`m not afraid

Being an ex- biker I had no trouble tuning twin Amals on a Mini, except the absolute maximum angle is 15°- otherwise they flood into the motor thru the idle jet.

Amal made special sets of carbs for the Mini/1100 range through Speedwell. The CA 400 for the 1100 and the CA 401 for the 850.
These were supposedly re-designed to work on the Mini and 1100.

Bike tuners have played with different jets and needles for decades, there will be plenty available if you have carbs of any of the sports bikes. Everyone i know who races in supersports or superbikes has the exhaust changed from standard, and then has the carbs rejetted. Since similar carbs are used on everything from 250cc to 1300cc i think there must be a suitable combination out there somewhere......

If not then you would need to precision drill the jets and machine the needles, but again like Matt says, if you are someone wo can make stuff, is this realy a problem? (admit that this kind of machining is specialist work)

cheers
michael

look at that teeny tiny microscopic alternator,

takes me back to the "injected a-series being short of horses" topic i started ages ago,

if one cylinder ran rich then the other ran lean because of a single injector then why not have 2 injectors very close to the port, i would have thought that at a rpm of 5000 - 8000(where we are aiming for right guys) this would have been smoothed out even though it's other 2 cylinders are being used the air rushing into that port just as the valve is about to open would still be enough to drag the fuel through, its always one step behind its self but it will use that next time around,

there was a picuture of a carby that looked like a webber chopped in half (not injected), was running on a 20b rotary, twas side draft and was only there to serve the extra housing, would be good if we found out what its called and put it on a manifold that is a twin carb just outside the port,

is there any other type of twin throat carb like a webber, the spacing between the throats on my down draft dello is different and nearly the same distance that the 2 intake ports are spread apart,

hey mick mini what are you doing at 3:40 in the morning :?

Hairy muff....

With some of the twin butterfly fuel injected set ups out there as well, it would be a fun avenue to explore when it comes to car tuning.
Now I think of it, Josh from Mini Imports had a motorcycle carbed 998 in a Jap import he has. He had it at the Big Day Out if anyone down here looked under the bonnet.
