Hey guys,

Okay so I haven't updated my build thread for ages but this is where I'm at --- I've finished chopping off the front of the car for my carbon fibre removeable front. Now I'm seriously toying with the idea of putting a B16A vtec in there...

As QLD's rules are toight like a toiger, is there anyone in QLD that knows an engineer close to the Brisbane area that's Mini friendly and would be able to certify the removeable front mods and subframe modifications?

Also I'm interested to see if there's anyone here on the forum that's capable of knocking up a subframe ( i think Tricky might know  )

Getting an engine's no trouble, I just want to be able to keep it as legal as possible for when I take it to get road-worthied when its all done :)

Cheers,
Sam

Carbon Fibre hey? I understand it may be for lightness but the cost would be phenominal. The are plenty of fibreglass ones around or the engineer MAY consider a steal one.

Not looking to put crap on your ideas but we've seen it before. People looking to spend squillions on their car only to run out of money or loose motivation once they realise how much it cost and how long it takes.

I say adopt the 'Agile' development approach........ 'Tricky' Treloar went for the 'Waterfall' approach but has moved to 'Agile' because of changing requirements throughout his build.

I second that. Goodluck indeed, I think you'll need it.

Oops, did I say flip? Sorry, it's just going to be removable at the moment. Yes I know, I need to find a good engineer to talk about it. I've read through the NCOP which talks about it, and the only thing annoying I found was that I need to get the material tested ( which means I need a sample of it somehow ) and I may need to fit a collapsible steering column... if thats even possible :? BUT, that was talking about fibreglass :? Else, I make a call to Brickworx and get a steel front again ( my old one had waaay too much rust, hence out come the grinder )

No thats ok JC, I've had this thing for a while, lost motivation... got it again, etc. How much do you think it would cost? I've sent a few emails, made a few calls, and I was very surprised... now I just need to find out the extra duty and GST. I figure while it's like this I may as well do it right and do it once :) I know how much most things cost, the only thing I'm not to sure of is the labor and materials for the subframe.

What year Mini is it? The later ones were made to meet the ADR for collapsible columns. (the earlier ones collapse but not in the same way that the later ones do.)
It would be ADR10A or ADR10B on the compliance plate.

It's a 1970 Mini K, i think that that's pre ADR (1971), am i correct? I'll have a look at the plate tommorow.

How much of a sleeper is that car!? When I saw it I thought 'now there's an idea' I haven't seen any B18C halfcuts recently tho and they cost a pretty penny apparently :( B16 for me :D

Does anyone have a rough idea of the costs of a custom subframe? Even for a 4EFTE one, at least it will give me a bit of a ballpark to try and work with at the moment... I have to get on the blower to Tricky.

It would be pre ADR10 but it could have the right dash structure for ADR10.

I couldn't find anything specific about ADR10 etc on the compliance plate, but it did say it was "manufactured to australian design rules" or something to that effect. I'll try and get a decent pic of the plate for you. Either way, what does that mean? If it's pre-whatever I dont have to worry about the steering column? :?

ADR10 enacted December 2nd, 1971.

So, if it was plated pre-this date, it does not have to comply (even though some cars were manufactured to comply)

Cheers,
Tricky
