the gears should be case hardened I think, this is because you don't want the whole gear to be hard, only the outer wear surface. Correct me if I am wrong...

That is correct. They are case hardened. If hardened right through they would be too brittle.

here ya go..

i havent pulled apart my box to assess the damage as yet, but it will get straight cuts, upgraded helicals if i can find them or full replacement with an A+ and conversion from steel unijoints and remote change to potjoints and rod change.

So what is this myth about A+ gears being stronger.. they have more helix angle so teeth are thinner, and the ratios are all crap too (compared to an S or 1275GT...)

shrug, i've heard they are a lot better, and increased helix angle would mean they're quieter?

i dont think i have S ratios anyway, and i could use a longer diff, because i can reach max revs in top gear with the 3.44

Helix angle makes em quieter, that's about the only +.
Oh and yes the layshaft & its bearings are a better setup, they do last longer.

cheers, i will have to look into it further, straight cuts are a bit noisy for street use.

diff pin looks harmless, i have some that are completely worn throu and snapped (killing the box). but not of torque, just factory 63HP injection engines with excessiv play between planet gear -> diff pin. may end like this
Image

did you rebuild the box? or was it an old one with new engine on top?
maybe a stupid question, but i'm allways interested in such damages.
and a last one: you won't ship the pinion to me to make a small analysis of the material, will you?

My A+ Box did the same thing with the pinion gear with stockish 1100 power. Gearboxes aren't my thing, but is the pinion gear usually the first to go?

No the diff pin and planet gears are the first to go in a well built box. Unless you don't spin any wheels. As said before, it's all good unless you drive her like a goose.

Spaceboy, dont get me wrong... I DO believe your gears broke and things fail and break ...
I DONT believe its from torque and the power you have... I think its the way its driven.

How much power do you have exactly? (Flywheel, not rolling road)
I have had to rebuild my box, the baulk ring broke right through the hardened area! But that was simply a dud part (I didnt even get to drive the car yet - just fitted motor + box)

Straight cut would be better probably, so would LSD etc, but under 150hp we are not really getting into danger 'power' yet...

With 150hp, if you treat the box a little rough its worse than treating the box a little rough with 50hp...

Pete.

Just a clarification, it's torque that kills gearboxes, not hp. If you put a Celica 5 speed behind a 300hp diesel it would not last long.

FYI, I've got at least 150hp and the gearbox has been in 10 years now - its bloody noisy though (SC)

Josh,
My post mortem of your box back then showed the pinion teeth had been cracked by a blow with a chisel or something, probably when someone was hitting the lockwasher.
I've seen it before...
