According to Ben Afford, finding room for air con in a Leyland/Clubman is very hard.

It's on the list of things to do, but I'm a fair way off getting the 4EFTE into a Mini yet to even have a look. (Need a subframe first.)

Just as a random offshoot to this , with the way technology is improving would it be possible yet to have a small electrically powered air conditionerwounted somewhere (in place of a right hand tank perhaps?) , I know it'd draw a lot from the alternator but surely they are getting good enough now you could have a big enough alternator to run it ?

Oh yeah , I do realise this question will cause the photo of the Yank car with the house air con unit on the side window to be shown again .....

I think if you were going to do a conversion you would take a very holistic approach very early on. You would take the opportunity to change the subframe mounts to the front of the car and change the castor arm mount.

Think more redneck , it was held to the side window with duct tape and had a honda generator bolted to the boot to run it ....

I just had a thought about this... You can get self contained air con units for boats. I know a company called MarineAir make some (actually make combined heater/aircon units) but maybe too big for a small car.

Alternatively some trucks have 12V self contained systems for the sleeper cabs that can run while the truck engine is not running

I dont think an electric type of a/c will work. too much power drain with not enough results. If you want to use the 4efte air con you will obviously need to mount the a/c compressor to run off the belt. And then mount the condensor somewhere... You should be able to use a later model mini evap unit inside the car? Ohh and the alternator mountings are causing a hell of a problem in a few conversions, so i mounting the compressor will cause only more headaches.
But with ALOT of dedication it should work
