After a couple of minor setbacks, I have rewired the car for the electric fuel pump, battery isolation switch, individual fuses for many items, and relays for the headlights, all on a new panel mounted on the floor where the passenger seat used to be.

A couple of pumps of the throttle and it started first time. Had to stop as it was already 10.30 and it would scare the crap out of the neighbours as we are in a villa complex. Will give it a big run tomorrow afternoon.

cheers
michael

How strange Mick... I started mine up a few days ago too.
And similarly, no issues with anything - started within about 5 seconds of cranking.

got the gear selector and the clutch sorted and drove it up and down the driveway today :D annoyed the hell out of the neighbours, but I was happy.

minor problem with the coolant leaking out from the thermostat housing once it got under pressure. I am using some bolts with washers, but i think i need to use studs and nuts. Also need to check the radiator cap is right, may be allowing too much pressure.

Amazing how much oil accumulates on the exhaust when you are handling it with dirty hands. It was smoking like crazy once it warmed up.

very close to a track day at wakefield now.....

Mick, bolts should be fine for the thermostat housing.
Make sure you use Permatex (loctite non-hardening) sealant on both gasket faces.
Also inspect thermostat housing for trueness.

A 10/13 pound cap should be fine for normal Mini use.
I am running a 13 pound (recovery) cap with an 88* thermostat and even sitting around the engine did not get hot at all.

1.19 at Wakefield Park first time out for me and the car yesterday, timed by an old guy who was there with his mate in an Austin special. Compare that to the steel body, iron head guys in the MRA races and I am already pretty close.

I had Greig Malaure set up the suspension, wheel alignment and put some of his 2nd hand race tyres on my wheels on Wednesday. He did this at short notice for me, and I really appreciate that. I also remembered to set the dampers to his recommendations after the first session.

Drove down there and was on the track with a V8 supercar and an AU XR8 GTP car. Mine ran all day, theirs did not. I ended up in one session with the track to myself and in another absolutely creaming the guy in the Skyline GT that they sent on with me.

I have some learning to do, especially about hard braking. I need to make the throttle pedal sit a bit lower by pulling the cable through, so it is easier to heel-toe.

The engine is fantastic, with all that low down torque, some of the time when I got it all wrong and went through the hairpins in third, it just pulled like a train on the way out. And that is with a 3.44 diff!

I spoke to Graham and Greig today, and both are very impressed with the performance that the car is giving. It is clearly down to their input to the important bits of the grunt and handling that is making such a quick time, as I am absolutley not a quick driver yet. Thanks to both of them for their input and the advice that they have offered.

Graham is very pleased with how my engine has done here, and with willy's at the drags as they are practically the same bar the 1.5:1 rockers on willy's. Go and buy yourself one. You won't regret it.

Oh well, on Monday I take it to the shippers to put in the container for the Kingdom of the Netherlands, where I will be resident for 3 years. Stay tuned to find out what happens when an Aussie built Mini racer goes on a little Euro adventure!

cheers
Michael

ps before anyone asks, my video camera is busted, won't work on battery power, so sorry no vids

Make sure you get in a club and get to Assen in the Netherlands.

If its quick at Wakefield it will be quick as Assen. Great track.

and if want a long day out take it to the 'Ring just near the border with Luxemburg and Germany - mini heaven

The fastest Grp N racers were only doing about 16s/17s last week so you should be happy with that time...try to get to Sinsheim in Germany
