firstly, Hi from Scotland.

Im looking to do a 4EFTE transplant into a 95 mini I have, but being new to these Toyotas and as Starlet GT's are pretty rare in the UK, I was wanting to ask a few questions about them.

(i) I see Automatic Starlets - is there any difference in the engine between this and a normal manual engine - apart from the obvious gearbox- can you convert an auto to a manual just by sourcing the gearbox?

(ii) What is the difference between a Starlet GT motor and the later Glanza?? - as my engine/gearbox will probably be coming from Japan via a mate who imports Subaru parts, I may be offered a glanza as its apparently easier than a starlet to get hold of. What problems am I likely to get witha Glanza unit over the Starlet one?

(iii) what do I have to do to the engine to get about 170bhp - that strikes me as enough for a road-going mini, and I will probably transfer my Nitrous from the '61 to this anyway as it will cope with a decent shot of gas - unlike the a-series (or should I say the mini gearbox)

thanks for any input.

Alex

Hi Alex,

Welcome aboard :)

(i) Only Difference is the gearbox - I just did a bearing in my manual and the replacement was originally an auto. You will need the whole flywheel assembly from a manual box as well. Alternatively any of the C series toyota geaboxes should bolt straight up.

(ii) There is no difference to the motor used in the Glanza (EP91), Earlier Starlets are (EP82) but all variants used the same 4EFTE 1331cc. Some of the later cars did get LSD's and they did slightly improve the ct9 turbo with a and b variants. only a few HP in it.

(iii) 170bhp is quite easy to get with just simple bolt on mods. Some have been known to do it keeping the stock turbo - the exhaust manifold needs to be changed as it's really restrictive and is the main cause of blown pistons.

You'll need a boost cut defender to run higher than 10psi and an adjustable fuel regulator to have any chance of getting the mixture right - as you increase boost the factory ECU dumps fuel as a safe guard to protect the motor.

I would go new exhaust manifold, TDO4/T25/KKR280 anything around that size will suit it nicely..

I thought Starlet GT's were quite common in Scotland?

Look forward to seeing another being built :)

Well answered Josh.

Welcome Alex - Josh's response pretty much sums it up - look forward to seeing a 4EFTE converted in the land of the kilt wearers.

Instead of a boost cut defender, I would instead opt for a boost controller, to ensure that the boost is kept at optimum and manageable levels - something like an Apexi AVC-R would by ideal.

Cheers,
Tricky

Thanks for that guys,

In reality I have only seen ONE Starlet GT and two Glanza's since I started thinking about this conversion last year. They dont seem to be very popular, but I could just be missing them (I do look as I want a shot in one just to see what the motor is like).

will be asking a lot more questions once I finally get my hands on a motor (seems it may be easier to buy an auto GT as a complete car, then get a gearbox - cheaper definitely! and as Im Scots, that appeals!!)

Two sites for you to check out......

www.ukstarletclub.com

www.toyotagtturbo.com

they will give you plenty of connections to starlets in your part of the world ;)

oh, some corrections too.....

LSD's were an option right from the very beginning.....not just on later models......

There are different gear ratios between the turbo and non-turbo manual gearboxes, and the flywheels/clutches are different sizes......215mm and 200mm

Glanzas apparently have thinner conrods (although it's hard to get accurate information on this as so few have been pulled down in Australia) which would make the EP82 engine arguably stronger, however it would have more rotating mass......and more K's

I was really tempted to buy an auto motor. I ended up with a 92K kms manaul EP82 front cut sent to SA for under 2 grand, so when the opportunity came up, I just went with it. And the truth is, I'm going to build the car for me, the ultimate Mini for Tim.

However. I wondered what an auto GT Mini would be like, it would be a little down on power to the wheels, but would still go nice enough. But would it fit? As I thought of building a Mini that everyone else in my family could drive, but couldn't get an auto front or motor all that cheap anyways, not from Adelaide anyways (more front cut came from Sydney)

auto wont fit, gearbox will take out 75% of the passenger side suspension tower/upright.
